      Senior IOS Developer Interview

      1 Jul 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Boston, MA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at WHOOP (Boston, MA) in Apr 2015

      Interview

After a lengthy phone screen for a senior-level contract position, I was told the position was no longer being offered, because the company abruptly decided senior positions will only be available to full-time (salaried) employees. When I agreed to interview for a senior-level salaried position, it was later downgraded to a mid-range position. Following a one hour technical evaluation and after multiple conversations with the in-house recruiter, I believe this company and the interview process was very misleading. After a process that stretched for several weeks, the internal recruiter said if they could not find someone in the next month they would contact me. WHOOP is developing another fitness tracking wrist band, but they almost keep it a secret on their website and during the interview process. I think this is intended to make the product sound unique and mysterious, even though there are currently hundreds of similar devices on the market, with dozens more on the way. And nearly all of them will be replaced shortly by smartwatches. During the interview, WHOOP falsely claimed their device is the only wrist-based fitness product that tracks live heart rate, but all of the leading brands (like Fitbit) now do this too. Another concern is that nearly the entire executive staff has less than three years of work experience. This includes the CEO and CTO who have only been out of college three years. For most startups, investors typically bring in more experienced, senior-level people for these critical roles. Following the technical interview, and after submitting samples of my work, I received no feedback. It seemed to make little or no difference that I was interviewing for an iOS developer role and I have published multiple, widely used consumer apps for a variety of platforms. In my experience, this is a strong indication of how successful a company is (and how they will treat employees).

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

My first conversations were limited to general discussions about my work experience and history. This included the first half of my technical evaluation interview. The technical portion of the interview lasted about 20 minutes and focused on a discussion about how to solve a somewhat abstract problem. There was no actual coding. If you have two trees (hierarchical data structures) how would you find (or map) the corresponding object (node) in the second tree? The interviewer stated they were not binary trees and the context was within an iPhone app.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at WHOOP (Natick, MA) in Jun 2022

      Interview

Even though I made my visa situation clear from the first interaction, I was encouraged to move ahead with the process. After going through the tech screen and 3 hour long virtual on-site interview, I was rejected based on risk associated with my visa. The interviewers themselves were friendly with the exception of one who was not open to a different solution to the one he came prepared for. Thankfully there was a more senior engineer on the call that handled the situation better. I use the product myself and see immense potential in it, but am very disappointed in the hiring process. The only logical reason to not having my candidacy approved by HR/legal before the process was continued is lack of respect towards my time. Would not recommend going through the hassle unless you are a US citizen.
