      Customer Service Representative Interview

      29 Sept 2013
      Anonymous employee
      San Antonio, TX
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at UnitedHealth Group (San Antonio, TX) in Dec 2011

      Interview

Hiring and interview process took over thirty days. On-line application is required with several computer skills tests included as one passes through levels of the online application process. For example, if the initial application responses pass the requirements then an option to continue with an assessment for reading, spelling and mathematical skills becomes available. If the initial application responses are not considered sufficient then this option is not made available instead a message states the application will be reviewed and responded to and then an email will appear within 48 hours declining interest. The same process is repeated for the reading, spelling and math assessment. If passing the required parameters the option to take an addition interactive job simulation becomes available. If criteria are satisfied the applicant is informed that they will be contacted for further processing. Again within 48 hours an e-mail is sent informing the applicant a phone interview will be scheduled and confirming contact information. Once the phone interview is scheduled, then executed, if criteria are satisfied during that interview there will be an in person interview scheduled. This in person interview is brief and more about what the job requirements and training period expectations are. The interview is on an individual basis but there are about 20-30 individuals scheduled for the same process. Again if the criteria are met an applicant is scheduled for another 'interview' which is again a group format. This second 'interview' is a computerized interactive job simulation similar to the first simulation during the application process. Expectations and training dates and times are outlined and drug testing is scheduled. At no point is there a job offer made thus far. Drug testing is mandatory and results are returned prior to any offer. Paperwork and facility locations are provided and there is no out of pocket expense except for time from the candidate. All requested information is verified and the candidate has the option to receive copies of any information that is provided UHC. Hard copies of transcripts are secured from the last completed institution, criminal background checks are secured, drug testing results are secured and references are checked. The candidate will not move further in the process if any of this documentation is delayed. If all requirements are met then another interview will be scheduled with a supervisor from the specific location and job level. Candidates are ranked after this interview and based on timing of all documentation acquired and scheduled for the next training class available. there are a limited number of slots available for each class and if not selected for the initial class then an applicant can be put on the wait list in the event than a higher ranked candidate is disqualified or declines an offer. The interview itself is a relatively informal 1:1 scheduled with a particular supervisor. My particular circumstance I can only hope was an anomaly. I was left to wait for my interview for 70 minutes and told on several occasions my interviewer would be with me. Security and the receptionist both reached out to the interviewing party on several occasions because I had been left sitting in the lobby for such an extended period of time. The person that eventually interviewed me was not who I was scheduled with and told me that the person who was supposed to be doing the interview was too busy. If I had not been out of work for over a year due to the week economy in 2010-2011, I would not have waited and would not have accepted the position. Overall the interview process was as it turned out very similar to many of the processes within the job itself. Long, somewhat convoluted and impersonal.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The most difficult question I had to answer was regarding ethics and how I would approach a situation where my supervisor has/had acted unethically. For me this is difficult because the appropriate action is not usually beneficial to middle management and I have been involved with instances in prior places of employment. Without understanding the company culture, expectations and processes for ethics violations at every level this is a make or break type question.
