      Outside Sales Flooring Interview

      12 Jul 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Manasquan, NJ
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Smart Carpet (Manasquan, NJ) in Apr 2014

      Interview

This interview goes back to 2014. I just placed an interview of another company up in my travels so I thought I would add this. First I applied from their website. Then I got a call from the sales manager who described the job in about a 5 minute oration. He asked me on the phone for my drivers license number and he would call me back sent this involved driving their vehicle. I got a call back about 5 days later to go in at a certain time to Manasquan . The interviewer was not prepared for the interview and I waited for about 45 minutes in the lobby in front of an employee making appointments. Finally I was called into the sales manager/director's cubicle who spoke actually for about an hour. It may have been more than an hour. (without exaggeration). I just sat their nodding and interjecting a thing or two once in a while. I actually thought they may be giving me an offer as I was very well qualified with documentation of my success and 8 years at the time consumer flooring sales. I also thought "why would someone speak to me over an hour unless they were going to offer me or are seriously thinking about offering me a position" Suddenly it ended and I was given two tests. One a math test and the other a short personality profile test. The math test was really a joke and I have a civil engineering background and also have programmed computers so it was juvenile, in my opinion. The personality test was odd. I don't personally believe in these tests. I believe they are nonsense but that is beside the point. It asked percentages for example of how long you speak to a customer. In reality a rep may speak 30 to 70 percent of the time as I have been at 100s of home sales interviews with presentations. One theory, I believe the politically correct answer in that test was not the one I choose as when I turned in the tests the attitude changed to "OK, thanks we will see what is out there." I believe they had 'fatal answers' in that test that they focused on, though that is conjecture. I took another job with a much larger company with nationally recognition about a week later.
