      Staff Software Engineer Interview

      20 Jun 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Personio in Jun 2023

      Interview

The interview process was long and grueling. The process was 6 stages long, I talked to VPs, EMs, Directors and Engineers. Mainly, 1 HR call then 3 leadership calls and then 2 technical calls: live coding and system design. The leadership calls were great but the technical ones were horrible. Specially the system design interview. It's the worst system design interview I have seen in my 15 years of experience as an engineer. Before the technical design interview, the recruiter sent me the task description which was weird, and she scheduled a short sync on it with me. The recruiter clearly told me not to prepare a full system design and that the task is not a take home assignment, the PDF document of the task also clearly states that it's not a take home assignment and that the interview won't be a presentation and that the candidate should allow a big part of the interview for collaborative problem solving. So I did just that, prepare questions, ideas and a simple Miro board. The interviewers came into the interview expecting me to present a fully fledged system that covers the all edge cases, sub-problems while also being scalable and highly available. They also expected a full database schema and all that. :|

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Design a fully scalable awesome system but without preparing for it but the interviewer will ask you to present it but it's not a take home assignment.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback regarding our hiring process. There was clearly a disconnect between what our Talent team communicated about the session and what it actually entailed, particularly regarding the technical conversations and the focus on systems design. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and frustration this caused you, and we appreciate your honesty in sharing your thoughts with us. It’s our aim to ensure transparency and clarity throughout the entire hiring process, and we strive to be thorough in evaluating candidates to make well-informed decisions. But we also recognize that a confusing or excessively long process can be both time-consuming and discouraging. Please rest assured that we have taken your comments to heart. As we work to live out our operating principle of #SeekToImprove, we will be reviewing our hiring process to identify opportunities for optimizing the duration and improving the clarity of technical conversations. We genuinely appreciate your interest in our company and your willingness to share your thoughts with us. Should you consider applying again in the future, we would appreciate the opportunity to provide you with a better experience that reflects the improvements we are implementing. Sincerely, Kálmán, Engineering Talent Acquisition Lead

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Personio

      Interview

Personio reached out to me. I did the first round of a one-hour behavioral, and got ghosted. Weeks later, no response whatsoever. I now see many mentions of ghosting in other reviews - what a joke. As a senior software engineer, I've probably given and taken over a hundred interviews in my life - this is literally a first. So completely unprofessional and disrespectful of a candidate's time.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Personio (Dublin, Dublin) in Feb 2024

      Interview

Very easy questions for this level, show the engineering quality of the company. Wouldn't recommend even tho they pay good salaries. Salary doesn't mean you'll be happy working for this company.

      Staff Software Engineer Interview

      7 Jan 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Personio (London, England) in Dec 2023

      Interview

I was asked to complete a coding challenge (groan) which is always a red flag for me. It was a live coding challenge where they asked me to pick a language I was comfortable in, so I did. But the interviewer didn't know the language at all! I was then asked to implement a sort of simple order system and talk about the solution as I went. It was really unclear as to whether I should just blindly "fill in the gaps" or restructure the code somit was testable and more aligned with solid principles etc, or just talk about what I would do and not actually implement much. The interviewer kept changing their mind on how I should proceed also. Due to the interviewer not knowing the language I wasted alot of my very short time explaining different bits of the language and why this is "thread safe" or "more efficient" whereas a proficient person would have known all that and we'd have moved on quicker. These kinds of interview always irritate me, as in what world as a developer are you asked to implement code that you've only just seen, within 20 minutes, perfectly with no time to thin.about it or understand.or.expand the requirements? If that's how these guys measure talent, then I'm out! Didn't get the job, little bit bitter of course, but its because I'd done two other interviews with this guys and it was all a bit of a waste of time as I'd only have got through this one through blind luck.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked implementation some code they copy and pasted into the window and talk about the code as I went.
