      Web Applications Engineering Interview

      26 Jun 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Waterloo, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at NextRoll (Waterloo, ON) in Jun 2018

      Interview

First round: 2 hour long challenge on HackerRank (didn't really need that long though). Second round: 1 hour technical video interview. Pretty standard, interviewer talked about themselves and their work, then we moved onto the CoderPad. It wasn't a Leetcode question. Basically had to parse a huge string representing a collection of objects and make a function to search for specific keywords, with some restrictions. I felt like the interviewer was looking for a collaborative process here. Overall I would say that this phase was pretty solid. Third round: behavioural phone calls with HR (10 min) and a hiring manager (20 min). Sounds simple, but this is where things got sketch. They asked me to submit availability for the two calls, so that's what I do. I was actually on the other side of the world during this time, so I could only give a few hours of availability. At first it's no problem, we schedule during the time slots I provided and all is good. Then a short while later they decide to shift the time slot an hour earlier (so the interview is at 6am for me) without even asking first!!! But sure, whatever. I decide to accomodate them since I'm pretty sure there's no way they would bother accomodating me. So I get up at like 5am to prepare for this 10 minute call. I wait until it's 6am, and guess what? The caller is late by like 7 minutes. I end up missing the call since I was staring up at my screen checking that the date and time was correct (my fault, sure), but I call them back immediately and end up getting voicemail. Like SERIOUSLY?? Like 20-30 minutes later they email me saying that the person making the second call is suddenly "too busy" and won't be able to make it. I reply quickly explaining my situation and apologize, but never even got an acknowledgement. Not surprising I guess, given their previous cookie cutter emails (they address emails like "Hi {candidate.lastName}"). Got rejected like the next day. TL;DR technical second round was a positive experience, but third round HR call was a hot mess and has convinced me that those guys honestly don't give a crap about you as a person.

      Question 1

Given a string representing a library of books, create a class which takes one such string, parses it, and provides a method to search for entries where at least one of its properties have a value that matches a given keyword.
