      Program Manager Interview

      13 Oct 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at New York Times in Oct 2021

      Interview

I had written an original interview review about not hearing back after making it to the final round of TWO separate panels; I was pretty peeved by this but was still pretty interested in the NYT as a company and figured maybe this was a one time situation thing on their end and recently applied to a few more roles a few months after that incident happened. Well... The same recruiter who originally ghosted me about completing the final rounds for two different roles reached out to me about a month ago and we had actually quite a pleasant conversation about a few different roles I had applied to, the kind of role I was interested in doing, etc. At the end of the call he asked me to send over my availability for the following week to speak to the hiring manager for a specific role. I did, and would you guess it, I NEVER HEARD BACK. If you didn't see me being a fit, I would've much rather appreciated you telling me that on the phone and there are obviously professional ways to say that. Honesty is the best policy. Also no acknowledgement of our prior contact only a few short months before or any reason why I never heard back, pretty awkward but ok. You should probably do better as a recruiter, or just not be one at all if you can't communicate with people in the slightest. Last week a completely different recruiter reached out to me about a different role and I scheduled a 20 minute phone screen with her, emailed her back and let her know what time I selected. This morning, the phone screen rolled around and... drumroll.... no call, no show, no email. What an absolute joke of recruiting. Honestly, don't even waste your time trying to interview with the New York Times. They clearly don't respect candidates time or schedule.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at New York Times (New York, NY) in Aug 2022

      Interview

Recruiter screen, hiring manager, three separate panel interviews only to be ghosted after completing all rounds and feeling great about it. Then a month later they asked me if I wanted to interview for another PM position and ghosted again when I gave availability.

      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at New York Times (New York, NY) in Feb 2022

      Interview

There were multiple levels of interviews. In order: HR, VP of the program, reporting manager, VP again, HR again. I finally ended up not taking the job because just before sending me the offer, their org structure changed, and I was aligned under a senior manager. That was not a change I was willing to take.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Process, on how I would deal with a compliance request from review of the request to decision, and if accepted for implementation, the workflow for completion.

      Application

      Interview

1st red flag: Recruiter sent me the wrong invite for another candidate interviewing for the same role. 2nd red flag: Got on a video call with the Recruiter but while she was friendly, she did not switch on her video while mine was on. 3rd red flag: Chat with hiring manager did not go well as she did not seem interested at all - almost like they needed to interview people to make up the numbers. Barely asked me anything relevant about my current or past experience. Zero follow ups after that - not even a generic email saying that I didn't make it to the next round. After looking at all these review, it's clear their process is broken.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Nothing that stood out - the questions are generic and frankly, rather dull and standard.
