      Senior Game Designer Interview

      25 Jan 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Gram Games (London, England) in Jan 2017

      Interview

Applied online, had a Skype screen, a 1:1 (meant to be group but only one person showed up) and an onsite in London. Skype calls were fine, standard screening and skill questions, but the on-site was bizarre. They booked the wrong plane tickets twice, second time with a return to a different country. They eventually booked the right flight (one of them a red eye). All interview calendar entries are MSK time so you'll 100% misremember meeting times. They rescheduled the interview as it was meant to start while I'd almost arrived in the office. They changed it from a two hour interview to a full day, apologizing for "not being transparent" so this was always the plan, just not shared with me. Despite asking me in for the full day, no lunch was provided. They did give me a glass of water. Someone had also brought their (otherwise lovely) dog into the office and people were taking turns riling her up and startling her, getting her to bark, growl and run around constantly. TL;DR Experience and skills don't matter except insomuch as they fit someone's gut feeling (this is on the design side, code and art may be different). Summon the interviewers' exact mental image of the perfect game in two hours out of thin air exclusively for them for free or you're not worth their time. Expect to travel thousands of miles and put in days of your time to be arbitrarily dismissed with no explanation or justification.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Was asked to take a couple of hours and provide a concept that's a "twist on Clash of Clans". Was then asked to take another hour to refine the design.
