I applied online. I interviewed at General Motors (GM) (Warren, MI) in Dec 2014
Interview
GM has outsourced the candidate screening process and HR is still ironing out the bugs. The interview preparation instructions stated to record the responses to questions. HR was unsure of what to instruct candidates to bring a video or a typed presentation. The interviews were one hour sessions with the Global Program Manager and the Engineering Manager. The questions were STAR format behavioral focused.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
How did you handle a situation where a team member chooses not to participate in meetings?
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at General Motors (GM)
Interview
(1) Online application
(2) Recruiter phone screen (30 min)
(3) Hiring Manager interview (30 min)
This was the worst recruiter experience I have dealt with. They were a half hour late to our scheduled call and casually apologized ("I'm sorry, man"). They asked me questions about my work experience that was irrelevant to the position I had applied. I had to follow up multiple times to get an answer about next steps, which I never received outside of an automated request to schedule a call with the Hiring Manager. The HM was clearly very smart and informed but I only had a half hour and was unable to build a rapport with them. I was nervous and probably sounded like I didn't know what I was doing as I tried to answer quickly in order to avoid running out of time and in the end I didn't even have time to ask questions. It felt like a losing situation from the beginning.
I also had to follow up with the recruiter three times before I received an automated rejection email. I would rate this experience as the poorest that I've dealt with.
There was back to back interviews scheduled for the job. Meeting with the leadership team on one day and the other program managers the other day. Leadership mainly focused on a behavioral assessment.
The meeting with the program managers was weird and a couple times i felt like i was being spoken to unprofessional. One of the program managers, who seemed to be a know it all, cut me off mid sentence and rudely asked for me to answer the question in XYZ format. It left me feeling even more tense and over thinking the rest of the interview.
GM conducts a general STAR Interview Process but to set yourself apart from the rest of the candidates, after you discuss the result also add how you applied the result to another situation
