      Software Engineer Interview

      17 Dec 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Genapsys

      Interview

Two interviews were on system design (mostly object oriented design, design classes, think about inheritance, etc) and one on computer architecture (memory) and basic data structure. One more interview which was mostly about the details of the projects and my resume.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Genapsys in May 2019

      Interview

Stay as far away from this company as possible, they will lead you on and keep you around until they find someone else to fill the position and end up wasting a massive amount of your time. I participated in two interviews with GenapSys including a phone screen and a ~3 hour long video interview with several different engineers and the hiring manager. Two days after the video interview I had I was sent an HR document for reference checks and one of my references confirmed they were contacted. Then after that, dead silence. Given that I was asked for references and they were actually called, I was lead to believe the position was essentially mine, but after a week of no contact I was forced to ask HR for an update. I was told that I would hear back with potential next steps within two days then didn't hear anything for 4 more days. I called again for an update since I had to decide between this and a research position at my university quickly only to be told they're still deciding between me and other "more local" candidates, with the HR person I spoke with even having the gall to express "concern" over me moving to the Bay Area and getting housing in time. This is wrong on so many levels, for one, this is the first and only company I've ever heard of that sends reference checks when still deciding between multiple candidates which is just bizarre and unethical. Secondly, my address is clearly listed on my resume and if the hiring manager or otherwise thought this would be an issue then my candidacy shouldn't have ever been considered in the first place. It's beyond insulting for someone to preach to me about the difficulties of relocating when I said I was more than willing to do so and could move quickly if given enough notice, especially after devoting as much time to this position as I had at this point. Lo and behold, a few hours after contacting HR for an update for the second time I received a rejection letter and the craziest revelation of all is that there were apparently MORE interview rounds left in the hiring process after 4 hours of interviews already, reference checks, and three weeks of correspondence in total. It was never expressed to me in any way, shape, or form that there were additional interview rounds left nor was there any clarification of what steps remained in the hiring process when I was sent the HR form for references. It is now obvious to me that I was being held onto as a "backup" hire essentially and GenapSys had 0 respect for my time or efforts. If this is how GenapSys treats interviewees, I shudder at the thought of how toxic their work culture must be, which is corroborated by reviews here mentioning the CEO's apparently rude and boorish behavior. On a side note, it's absolutely pathetic that this company thinks their intern position is so great that multiple rounds of 3+ hour interviews are necessary when it was only offering 28 hours a week which, at the salary rate for the position, came out to significantly less earnings that the average SWE intern position.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

A few average LeetCode questions followed by some language specific questions based off resume (e.g. set operations in Python). Interviewers stumbled over their own words constantly, seemed to make up nearly every question on the spot, and would change their mind right after posing a question occasionally then ask a new one. Interviewers often phrased questions in strange ways to avoid giving away the answer even though there were much clearer and easier to understand ways to do this.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I sincerely apologize that you didn't hear back. This feedback was shared with the hiring managers and the recruiting team to ensure that getting back to applicants doesn't slip through the cracks. In any event, best of luck in your job search and sorry again for the poor experience you had.
