      Heavy Diesel Mechanic Interview

      11 Jul 2024
      Anonymous employee
      Cleveland, TN
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied in-person. I interviewed at FirstFleet (Cleveland, TN) in Dec 2022

      Interview

Saw an ad on Craigslist with phone number, made a call, was told to send resume and then after invited to come in. A guy walked me around the service inspection lane, showed me the lot and shop, then walked to talk in the office. The discussion was mainly about pay, to substantiate the below-market pay was due to significant investment in tools, shop facility and the (non-existent) training program where FF selects 2 overachievers to the Knoxville certification center to test in ASE. The other deceptive lures used by the First Fleet interviewer were 90/180 day performance review with possible raise, leading up to substantial 1 year raise and possible bonus. Then the interviewer showed me the replacement parts inventory location and where uniforms rack provided by Cintas Services brings the laundry back. Offer made on the spot, take it or leave it, "First Fleet negotiates based on what we feel is the market standard." Occasionally, it was said (such as in my case I'm assuming based on work history) my offer was above most other mechanics present several years already, and that pay disclosure to peers could lead to immediate termination (which only lead to rumor and division once somebody supposedly leaked a number.) Lastly after 1 year DOT certification for truck inspection was sponsored by the Company - come to find out later they don't do that - and the fellow denied having said that during the interview.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Generally the interest was about mechanical history, diagnostic, situational repair, and a few about coworker conflict resolution.
