      Sales Associate Interview

      9 Mar 2011
      Anonymous interview candidate
      South Jordan, UT
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at CarMax (South Jordan, UT) in Feb 2011

      Interview

Applied online received a phone interview/prescreen the same day. The phone interview was general feel for sales experience and “why are you looking” typical stuff. I had an interview in person a few days later. The first thing they had me do was answer some background information questions on a computer. “Are you sure you don’t sometimes use drugs, its ok you can tell us”…. Really is this the caliber of people they hire that they 1) need to ask these type of questions 2) actually find this type of screening useful. The interview was with an inexperienced sales manager “in training” and a buyer. Red flag: any company uses the informal “in training” titles either has so much bureaucracy it’s difficult to promote or managers delay promotions to make numbers look better in the interim. The sales manager in training bit his lip when I talked and looked up at the ceiling, so I new from the beginning I wasn’t going to get the position. The interview questions were typical. Give a specific example of when you when “above and beyond” or a customer. … dealing with a difficult customer. They had me bring a printout of a car from the website and roll play as if I was a selling the interviewer the selected car. He stone walled and said things like “I need my wife here to test drive”. I wasn’t really prepared for the stonewalling but by then I knew I didn’t have the job anyway just from the body language of the interviewer.. I was told by other people that they look for customer service more then “sales” but this interview was really focused on sales. Strange because the employees you see there are far from polished, most of them are awkward looking with un-pressed shirts and the “manager in training” was even wearing shorts in February with his garments (Mormon underwear) hanging past the shorts when he sat down. Wish I would have been offered the job though, I hear it’s a great part time gig.

      Anonymous interview candidate
      Oxnard, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I interviewed at CarMax (Oxnard, CA)

      Interview

After doing a lengthy personality assessment online, I did a phone interview. The phone interview went well and I was invited for an in-person interview. At the in-person interview, I had an extensive conversation with the sales manager, David. I thought it went really well. After that, I met with two other salespeople and we did a role-playing session where I greeted one of them and gave him an overview of a car on the lot. After that, they said I'd get an answer in the next few days. I never did. While it's obvious that I didn't get the role, Carmax lacked the professionalism to at least send me an email letting me know that I had not made the cut. Due to this experience, I will not be shopping Carmax the next time I need a new vehicle.
