      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Block (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2016

      Interview

I met a Square employee at one of their events who encouraged me to apply for a position, pointing out a couple that might fit given my background. After a phone screen I had two coding/pair-programming technical interviews, one remote on Coderpad and Skype video chat and one in person at Square. Both interviews were similarly structured in that it was a pair programming experience, where the interviewers were not punitive but encouraging, and they even contributed some code. I came away from the first one feeling pretty awesome in terms of what we'd put together in the time alotted. Not that I knew everything, but it felt like a collaborative experience. The challenge was to build a simple card game, delineate the construction of a deck, deal in a shuffled manner, see if a group of cards meets the game's criteria. The card game was mostly working with objects and their properties, building up several functions to manipulate them. Some simple iteration, pushing objects onto an array. Then test to see if a given number of cards meets conditions specified through if statements and boolean logic. As far as I know, I was able to complete this question correctly. The second didn't go as well. I had trouble getting an initial hold on things, then I think I lost a lot of confidence. I kept trying to figure out if I was on the right track, but it seemed like the interviewer wanted me to do something else but wasn't really saying it. It might have been just part of the frantic "I don't know how to answer this!" freak out, though. The challenge was to make a word game, finding dictionary words? I think the idea was to use tries, but I got bogged down on this one. I moved on after the first interview, but they didn't want to continue after the second. In each case there was actually more confusion than I would expect in terms of hearing back from Square, and they said there were some crossed wires internally. Overall, it seemed like a more pleasant, collaborative experience than I have come to expect technical interviews to be.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience with Square. We always appreciate comments and feedback from our candidates so that we can improve our process. We hope that your post will be useful to others going through a similar Software Engineer, Front-End interview. We were really disappointed to read about your difficulty getting in contact with your recruiter- definitely not cool, and we’re really sorry. We will discuss this feedback with the recruiting team to help solve this issue in the future. The candidate experience is very important at Square and we value your feedback. Best, The Square Talent Team

      Interview

Smooth and professional. In each round of interview, there are two interviewers present to avoid bias. All of the interview questions are conducted in online pair-programing software. really good interview experiecne, would recommend this company to anyone who values culture and respective environment.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Block (Toronto, ON) in Nov 2021

      Interview

Had a phone call with a recruiter then went on to a pair programming session with two Square engineers. Question was a javascript problem on codepen. It wasn't too difficult but my time was eaten by searching up vanilla js dom manipulation as I've mostly worked with frameworks. Really wish that was made clear before the interview so I could of brushed up on that.

      Interview

Talked to a recruiter then had a technical interview with an engineer over codepen. I thought this interview was extremely fair and enjoyable. They give you a small code base to debug as well as build new features. Interviewer provided helpful tips when needed. It's refreshing to see a company attempt to step away from the useless white boarding algorithms.
