Babycell interview questions

The interview was okay. However,they asked me to pay them gross salary of a year in cheque, which they will keep in a locker and said the reason for that is so that I dont leave the organisation before a year.I dont know whether companies do this or not,or whether they allowed to do this or not legally. I found this quite strange,it was like a paid probation to me. I was so enthusiastic about the job,however this one condition that they put came as a shocker to me,considering it was an entry level position
