      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at AlixPartners (Southfield, MI)

      Interview

Probably the longest process I've been through (4 months total). First were a couple phone interviews with HR spanning a few weeks. The reps gave an overview of the firm and more details about the job description. Questions were mostly about my professional background and future interests (why consulting, why AlixPartners, etc.) Second was a 30 minute case interview over the phone with a consultant. Standard management consulting case, nothing too complicated, all conceptual with no numbers. The interviewer will keep you steered in the right direction throughout the case. Third was a in-person interview in one of their offices. The interviews begin in the morning and last until the afternoon. The day's agenda is presented to you when you arrive and for me consisted of a case presentation, a high level case with no numbers plus Q&A, a garden-variety Q&A session, and a Q&A over lunch. Then, a psychological and an IQ-like exam. For the presentation, you're expected to role-play a presentation with 2 consultants acting as management. They leave you with a stapled sheet of papers with a narrative, some data and charts (some basic calculations were necessary) and ask that you prepare a presentation with the solution to the provided objective within an hour. After the hour is up, the consultants come back in, you present your findings and provide a little Q&A. I felt that the case wasn't particularly difficult, but time management was an issue. In retrospect, I should have spent more time carefully reading and thinking through the material and objectives and less on doing calculations and creating the slides which were a big time sink. I left the presentation with a bad taste because I missed a key, high-level answer that I had seen many times in practice cases. The psych and IQ tests were interesting, but not terribly difficult. I believe I scored well on the IQ test. The psych test seems somewhat more subjective, but I don't feel it hurt my chances. I received a call back within a week saying that they were not going to move forward with my candidacy, which was disappointing, but not unexpected. Either way, it was a very good experience and everyone I spoke to was personable. HR did a great job at communicating and handling the logistics of the interview process. My only real beef was that the in-person interviews kept getting rescheduled due to lack of consultant availability. The process would have been a few weeks shorter had that not happened.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 8 months. I interviewed at AlixPartners (New York, NY)

      Interview

Lack of transparency throughout. Completed several components of the interview. HR and hiring team slowplayed process - has to reach out for multiple updates and just dragged along. Similar to below interview, still being considered after my performance; told no hiring yet ongoing job posts exist. Wish this process was simpler without so many steps and lack of communication.

      Interview

Did not take too long due to an accelerated business need. However, it was an intense process. The process included an external recruiter screen, internal HR screen, a panel interview with function leads, and two interviews with senior stakeholders. There was also a testing round and an interview with an organizational psychologist.
