I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at 1Password in Oct 2023
Interview
I had a 30-minute phone call with a recruiter a few days after I submitted my application. The recruiter was very efficient, friendly and professional. She quickly scheduled a 1-hour video call with the hiring manager - the manager of their Item Management team. During the call, the manager asked me about: 1. My experience and background in general. 2. An example showing that I mentored a coworker. 3. A situation where I reacted to a constructive suggestion. 4. An example showing that I proposed a solution to a problem. 5. A situation where I disagreed with a coworker. The next business day after the call, I received the rejection email. The team's feedback was: 1. "We have decided not to proceed with your candidacy and will be moving forward with a small group for this opportunity". 2. "There is a focus on more extensive technical experience with Rust and less so in C programming". The first point doesn't make any sense: if they'd like to stay small, why did they hire? The second point is baseless and arbitrary: the manager didn't ask me anything about my technical skills but drew a conclusion that my Rust skills is under-qualified simply because I use C for a longer time. Apparently the manager of the Item Management team is incompetent and unable to evaluate candidates' technical background. Working with such a manager wouldn't be beneficial to an engineer.
