Memorial Hermann Health System has been named one of the Top Workplaces 2024 by the Houston Chronicle. Ranked 20th among large companies with 500 or more local employees, Memorial Hermann was the highest ranked heath care organization in that category. “Creating healthier communities starts by ensuring a supportive environment for our workforce. That’s part of our culture and a key component of the delivery of high-value care. We're honored to be recognized by the Houston Chronicle,” said Lori Knowles, senior vice president and chief human resources officer for Memorial Hermann. Thank you to our employees, we are thrilled to be ranked for a third year in a row.
For Rocio, Hispanic Heritage Month serves as a positive reminder to chase her goals and to celebrate the diversity within her community. “[To me], being Hispanic has taught me to be strong, support others, and to not shy away from opportunities even if they are outside of your comfort zone,” she says. “This has helped me grow professionally and strive for more.” That’s why she’s member of the Hispanic/Latin American Organizational Leadership and Advancement Employee Resource Group at Memorial Hermann, which can help to expand opportunities for education, mentorship and leadership opportunities for Hispanic employees while fostering appreciation for diversity. “As a Hispanic person, I learned about the many cultural differences in my own community,” she says. “We have all embraced one another and we are still part of the same culture. I believe this mindset can be applied to our larger community to embrace and appreciate everyone’s differences. This creates a safe space for our patients and employees, allowing everyone to have a positive experience." The Good Samaritan Foundation's Excellence in Nursing Awards recognize and celebrate nurses in Greater Houston who excel in their fields. We are excited to spotlight the amazing Memorial Hermann nurses who received awards this year. Ben has spent most of his career working in the Cardiovascular Unit at Memorial Hermann - Texas Medical Center, dedicated to providing exceptional care and advocating for his patients. Ben has been recognized for his compassion and dedication as a bedside nurse, charge nurse & preceptor but his role stretches beyond just this. As the Chair of the System Professional Governance Congress, he is involved in the promotion of quality practice & outcomes, process improvement and a healthy workforce and participates in meetings and events promoting nurse advocacy at the local & state level. It was already an honor for Ben to be nominated for this year's awards that he was overwhelmed when he learned that he is a silver award winner. "Receiving recognition like this is one of the things that makes you want to come back and continue doing the work day after day. The encouragement is telling that you are doing something right & making a difference." Ben's positive impact goes beyond his patients and his leadership has influenced colleagues and the healthcare community. In return, Ben has been impacted by his colleagues. "I would not be good at what I do without a team around me. You do not work alone and the men and women I work with are extraordinary."

Madeleine was looking to get her foot in the door in pediatrics while in nursing school and she was ecstatic to see our Professional Student Nurse program had an opening in the pediatric heart center. Even though Madeleine was nervous at first and had never worked with kids before, the team walked her through the unit and how to properly handle young cardiac patients. "I am so grateful for the two years in the Professional Student Nurse program because they showed me what it was like to work in a hospital. They prioritize that you are a student first and want to help you succeed as a student and nurse. It was an easy decision that after I was done with school that I wanted to stay in this department." Madeleine applied to our Nurse Residency Program and began in July as an RN, Pediatrics Heart Center IMU. As Madeleine continues her nursing career, she is amazed at how much she is learning. "I know I am going to learn over 20 things each day that I didn't know and I love that right now." Are you interested in building your skills in our Nurse Residency Program? Applications for the spring cohort open on September 8! Learn more!
In honor of Celebrate Diversity Month, we’d like to highlight the commitment and hard work of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Champions. Since January 2023, Claudia, Manager, Clinical Projects at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights, has served as co-chair for her campus Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) group, driving Memorial Hermann’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment for all who enter our doors. "I believe a safe and caring environment supports improved patient outcomes," Claudia explains. Her role as an EDI Champion involves gathering feedback from staff and organizing educational initiatives to foster a more inclusive culture. One of Claudia's proudest accomplishments is the inaugural Celebrate Diversity Fair, which attracted hundreds of attendees and featured over 20 staff-run booths. "It was a wildly successful event that was both fun and educational," she says. Additionally, Claudia led an education and screening fair at the Acres Homes Community Center, where she and her team volunteered to serve the local community. For her, EDI is about appreciating differences while celebrating shared values. "It helps us be better healthcare workers and create a better environment for our patients and community," she says. Start each day in a place that values inclusion!
