Julián Ramsés Hernández Santillán was first introduced to Flowserve eight years ago while accompanying a friend through the area where our Santa Clara, Mexico, Quick Response Center (QRC) is located. Within a few weeks, Ramsés was a part of our team. He had become an expert in complex technical work and was looking for a role that would challenge his skills. Ramsés knew during his interview and the technical test that the knowledge of machines and skills required would help him take his expertise to a new level. “As a machinist, the most important things to know are Flowserve’s safety rules and how to interpret plans and measurement,” he said. “You must be able to analyze and understand the tolerances you have for each piece because that is the difference between finishing a good piece or having scrap. Other knowledge of the workshop machines such as lathes, milling machines, presses, parallel and vertical lathes, etc., is important in this role too.” While at Flowserve, Ramsés has grown both personally and professionally. Before joining Flowserve, military veteran Jess Tuntland started her professional journey in Michigan State University’s Air Force ROTC. The experience prepared her for a successful military career that transformed her into a project management professional. “In a way, I backed into project management. When I was commissioned as a second lieutenant, the Air Force assigned me to my first project manager role,” said Jess. “I’ve led acquisition projects that have benefited the Department of Homeland Security, Air Force Special Operations Command and the Joint CBRN community. I even had the opportunity to teach project management at the University of Louisville.” Jess separated from the Air Force as a major in 2018 and joined Flowserve. She transitioned smoothly into the world of project management for the Pumps Division because the diversity of industries was like the wide-range of learning opportunities available through the military. “I love project management because no matter the organization, this role interacts with everyone. It takes many different disciplines to keep a projec
“In my role I get to create drawings, run analysis on performance of our designs, and do 3D modeling, which make it possible to put the plans into production. It’s great to see a project on paper then be able to stand in front of the real thing. We question and test what’s possible often. We’re always expanding our knowledge-base as a company.” Growing up in a family of engineers, Cinnamon Christian developed an early passion for math and science and was interested in how she could apply these things in a practical way. She joined Flowserve’s R&D team in 2012, and the ever-changing environment for developing solutions for customers has given her a mix of experience within the team. From product development and design to a specialized focus on solutions for pump hydraulics, the challenge of creating something new is what excites Cinnamon the most. #CareerSpotlight #Flowserve
“I was drawn to a career in engineering because it’s a practical way to analyze, explain and predict the physical works, and then use the knowledge to enhance it,” said Kirsten Murphy, Flowserve Product Engineer (PE). “For the same reasons, I originally set out to study the brain, but I realized I had more passion for math than anatomy!” Kirsten began her Flowserve journey in 2017 as an R&D intern at our facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. She excelled in a variety of engineering roles and sparked innovation for our compressor seal product lines. As a PE, Kirsten is responsible for developing products, proofing concepts and pursuing new opportunities – such as leading an initiative to improve the manufacturing method for dry-gas seal face lift-off technology. She explains that despite the highly technical calculations and design involved in this work, communication is key. “The majority of the solutions we develop are the result of collaboration: We arrive at the best solutions by combining expertise and perspectives from all areas of the product-development process.” Kirsten fee
