Modern medicine can shift the gut microbiome within months. New research in Elsevier's Cell Reports by Cell Press found that after only limited medical contact, the gut microbiota of remote Amazonian Indigenous communities began shifting toward patterns more common in industrialized populations, even without major diet or lifestyle change. Over four months, microbial diversity declined, fiber-associated bacteria decreased, and genes linked to antimicrobial resistance became more common. The strongest shifts were seen in children. AI is transforming academic research, bringing both significant opportunity and serious responsibility. Jill Luber, Chief Technology Officer at Elsevier, joined Cliff Saran on ComputerWeekly.com’s Downtime Upload podcast to discuss Elsevier’s approach to AI: accelerating discovery while ensuring the technology is guided by integrity. AI can help surface connections across millions of papers, identify gaps in the literature, and reveal important unanswered questions. But risks such as hallucinations, bias, and AI-generated fake science make human oversight essential. For publishers, protecting the integrity of the academic record remains a fundamental responsibility. Listen to the podcast episode: http://spkl.io/6047ACYNz
