To honour Black History Month, we partnered with Black Skin Directory to host an in-person panel, “Beyond the Surface”, exploring representation in science and skincare. Moderated by Khadijat (Dija) Ayodele, and featuring voices from across the beauty landscape — Gary Thompson, MUA and content creator, Caroline Ufuoma O., and Joseph Basham from our team — the conversation brought transparency and education to the forefront. Together, the panel unpacked enduring myths about Black skin, discussed the safe and effective use of direct acids and SPF, and explored how representation in science, education, and marketing builds trust and belonging in beauty. We’re grateful to everyone who helped create this space for open dialogue, learning, and representation. Conversations like these remind us that progress in beauty happens when we come together.
Last month, we hosted a Wellness Fair for our employees at our Toronto office because we believe in nurturing the health and well-being of our people. The day was entirely dedicated to prioritizing the physical and mental health of our teams. Employees enjoyed movement sessions like Yoga and Pilates classes, a catered lunch, and mindset & self-care workshops focused on cultivating a healthy mindset and creating sustainable self-care activities. We remain committed to creating an environment where everyone feels cared for.
Single use plastic waste is a problem. We want to do our part to help reduce its impact. We’re partnering with 4ocean PBC to help remove over 1,000,000 kilograms of ocean and ocean-bound plastic over the next 3 years. Since 2017, they’ve removed over 18,000,000 kilograms of plastic and waste from our coastlines, rivers and oceans. We’re proud to support this team in their work to create cleaner oceans and a healthier planet for all. Small steps towards change can lead to positive outcomes in the future. Today is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. Much of our business and our people are situated on the unceded territory of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis People. We are committed to creating a world of Belonging and to do so, we must recognise the history of colonialism in Canada, and the continuing impacts on First Peoples. This year, we’ve made a meaningful step in our journey - our first Reconciliation Action Plan. Developed in consultation with Indigenous Peoples and Communities and in partnership with Creative Fire Canada, our plan outlines our commitment to deepen our relationships with First Peoples through: 🧡 Intentional year-round learning and cultural awareness education, in partnership with Indigenous providers. 🧡 Building deeper relationships with Indigenous-led organisations and businesses. 🧡 Increasing representation of Indigenous practises and people in our business. Reconciliation is a journey, and it requires more than words and commitments. It requires action. We look forward to sharing our full Reconciliation Action Plan with you soon, and will keep you up to date on our progress.

Last month, we welcomed 40 grade 10-11 students from all over Canada to our Toronto HQ office and labs for a field trip and careers talk as part of Engineering Outreach’s University of Toronto Blueprint program. The Blueprint program is a four-week academic enrichment experience for motivated Black students passionate about science and engineering. Science is pretty important to us at DECIEM, and ensuring the field of STEM reflects our communities is vital to creating the world of Belonging we all deserve. Engineering Outreach is a network member of Actua, a national leader in breaking down the barriers that prevent equity deserving youth from accessing STEM experiences - and our latest community partner. We look forward to working closely with Actua to support access to STEM education for all. 🔬🥼
At DECIEM, our commitment to skincare goes beyond product innovation - it’s rooted in advancing scientific understanding and meaningfully expanding our footprint as a leader in science-backed skincare to the broader research and education ecosystem. As part of our growing academic partnerships with Seneca Polytechnic Cosmetic Science program and Centennial College Biotechnology program, our scientists recently delivered guest lectures that brought DECIEM’s real-world expertise into the classroom. Seneca, our team joined the Capstone course to speak on delivery science - including how we formulate for optimal skin penetration and efficacy, and the testing methods we use to support that work. At Centennial, we presented to students in the Analytical Chemistry course, showcasing the depth and rigour of our analytical capabilities, and their role in ensuring product quality and consistency. These lectures are part of a broader effort to strengthen the dialogue between industry, academia, and you! These partnerships reinforce our belief that fostering science in the academic and research community is essential to building transparency, credibility, and scientific literacy in skincare. We also hosted student visits to our Fraser campus, where they toured our R&D, Clinical, and Microbiology labs, as well as our separate Analytical and Manufacturing spaces.
