OR - One of the worst places I have ever worked

Pros

I work in the OR. This is a relatively large hospital. Maybe there are decent departments to work for here but not the OR. The pros are only that (hopefully) change is coming. Wuesthoff was recently purchased by a much larger corporation called CHS. This new company is one of the largest in the country. Some small changes have already been implemented and I can only hope that many more are to come.

Cons

In the OR, there is no teamwork. Only us versus them. The current OR at Wuesthoff is split in half between newer people (who have been with the company for a year or less, myself included) & tenured people who have been with the company ten years or more. The tenured people run the show not allowing any new ideas or thoughts. The world of medicine changes every day and this type of attitude only holds the company back. Anything deemed 'not the Wuesthoff way' is forbidden even if it would improve cost savings, or organization and even if it would benefit patient safety. The company insists on doing things 'the way they've always done them, period'.

Pros

The best coworkers I've even experiences; teamwork was always important to all of us. More then just employees of the same company, we were like a family.

Cons

Hospital was bought out by a nationally recognized company called HMA and a lot of changes took place. Many of these changes were not met with a willingness of employees to change. The hospital went from not-for-profit to for-profit. Being short staffed was a major issue for many months, however there was no action done to try to fix this issue.

Pros

you will meet a lot of lovely, hardworking people to get you through the days. when you get a good supervisor/manager, they will really do their best to root for you and work with you. when i was there, health insurance was decently-priced, even when hands changed, though i'm not sure if that remains the case.

Cons

there seems to be a sense of uncertainty that grew worse over time. between the changing hands at the top of the corporate latter, to buy-outs, the environment simply became unstable. for the most part, it's become a revolving door for employees. most doesn't stay six months, never mind a year, and those who stick around tend to get treated poorly unless they are grade-a suck ups, and even then those folks might not even be so lucky. also, pay raises? good luck seeing those anymore. if you're hired per diem, you'll never see them, anyway, by virtue of that title, and trust me, unless you move on to management or an entirely different job title, you will never stop being per diem. at one certain facility, it was a very convenient way for them to have a herd of employees without having to worry about the question of raises and without having to provide benefits options. basically, the hospital as a whole is rather exploitative of their employees. about half the employees, i'm not even sure how they made it past interviews, though, considering how many of them were awful people who treated patients like they couldn't even pretend to give a crap about their care. the company has sort of always been a mess, but it simply gets progressively worse every year.
