Deceptive, delusional management

Pros

There are some good people on the team, and the workload is not too demanding, which means that it is not an unpleasant place to spend the day. There's frequently free food and numerous (irrelevant) celebrations.

Cons

I have never worked anywhere with worse management than this. They are passive aggressive and dishonest. Everything is all smiles and talk of teams and cultures, but in reality they are scared and mean. Fighting for bigger pieces of a shrinking pie. Each new iteration of the leadership team (and there are frequent coups) is worse than the previous one.

Thank you for your feedback. You are correct, there are some great people on the team; we continue to be proud of our people and our “One Team” culture displayed across the organization. We are also pleased to have introduced a few new communication vehicles including employee driven initiatives, empowering employees to freely or anonymously ask questions, voice their opinions and most importantly make suggestions regarding any area of the business. I welcome you to leverage these resources, offer solutions and contribute to our success.

Pros

Downtown location, although that's changing, and am not looking forward to the walk from Union Station to the Queens Quay in -20C weather this winter. The building we are moving into is outdated and there are not a lot of places to eat nearby. Friendly people, average benefits and good work/life balance. They do try to create a fun company environment with quarterly town halls that sometimes happen offsite, where there are snacks and beverages provided. These events are enjoyable and a great way to develop relationships with your peers.

Cons

First off the salaries aren't competitive with the rest of the Toronto market, and the work isn't overly innovative and interesting. They are trying to turn that around on the technology side, but it's way too late. There is a huge mountain of technical debt for them to overcome and they are also trying to switch technologies at the same time with a very limited number of developers left in the building, who are not proficient in these new development languages yet. Somehow amidst all of this they will have to maintain our existing products. It's unlikely we will produce any new product development work until I'm guessing late next year. This new strategy comes from our new CTO, who at the moment is calling the shots for pretty much the whole company, so we're all left wondering if we actually have a President in the building, or if he's actually the CEO instead. I presume by the time they clean up technology and make it more efficient for us to create new products, we'll be dead in the water as LinkedIn, Indeed and all the other job board players will have come out with even better products and services. We're just so behind that that it's rather frustrating and it's no wonder the people with the talent and great ideas leave Workopolis. How can you blame them? On that note, since our revenue is so flat, we are constantly laying off people left and right. This has been happening for a few years now. And with the new CTO in place, I gather we'll lose more people because his leadership style is not inclusive, and no one in Technology actually believes his vision is feasible. It's rather worrisome. The environment today in the office is stormy and morale is at a high time low. Workopolis used to be a place where they valued openness and honesty, but not anymore. Today you're afraid you'll lose your job if you speak critically about the new strategy. We've seen this happen already with a few people who have left the building.

Our new office location will be a 10 minute walk from Union Station; great for our commuters! We appreciate your thoughts; there is no doubt some skepticism about the amount of change all at once, but the future is very bright and we have an amazing team of employees who are always up for new challenges.

Pros

- Quite ahead of the game in terms of technologies (the re-writing in their Technology Department was for cutting cost by switching over to free/open-source tools, not because they are behind). Great place for developers who want to learn and add the latest skills to their resume. - Friendly people where you might be able to make friends for life. - Recognition programs to motivate employees. - Lots of vacation days.

Cons

- Last year, they hired a few people who are very good at presenting themselves as passionate and innovative. They are usually great speakers and have lots of ideas (good or bad). However, they all failed to meet deadlines and cannot deliver. The projects they worked on dragged on for almost a year, people from other teams had to stop their work and help finish what they cannot finish. This added a lot of stress to the team-mates. They tried to let management know but since the managers are all fooled by their talks (and didn't see how they argued with co-workers on the most trivial things which is a waste of everyone's time or simply, they were too busy laughing at cat videos on YouTube/chatting on-line), they refused to listen. Eventually, the company lost a lot of money due to these incapable workers, and the fact that other capable people had to cover for them. - Company invested tons of money to sign a deal with a partner, and spent almost a year to let the in house technology team to integrate with the partner's product, thinking it's the next big thing. What they didn't see is they are totally targeting the wrong market and nobody wants to buy the product once it was done. The Marketing people who signed the deal were long gone and got another great job in another place, while the people left behind had to clean up the mess.
