Out of touch, stagnant leadership

Pros

Great retirement benefits. Flexible work schedules (depending on your manager and job duties). Plenty of paid holidays and generous PTO for salaried employees.

Cons

Leadership is stagnant and consists of a lot of long time employees who made their way up the chain by being the next man in line when somebody moves up or quits. This is great if you just want to get a promotion, but it leads to people being in power with no skills, expertise or outside experience being brought to the organization. When somebody is being replaced, "After an exhaustive nation-wide search", it ends up being the person below them just getting promoted. They wont fire people for poor performance, they just keep letting them do a terrible job and negatively impacting those around them. The "Raises" are pathetic for working staff (1%/yr), while upper management will see raises in the tens of thousands. This is especially disturbing for a Non-Profit organization that has leadership with higher salaries than equivalent positions in larger, for-profit companies. Being a Non-Profit, take a look at the publicly available 990 form from the IRS to see for yourself. The student newspaper occasionally publishes these numbers as well.

Pros

amazing benefits (403b w 11% match) good healthcare free cell phone and gym membership excellent PTO

Cons

-1% raises are a JOKE -not much room for advancement -change takes forever -CIO was hired because of knowing someone in HR. She has an impressive resume otherwise, but I feel like she is not qualified for the job and was picked to please executive management and cut funding to our department -strong likelihood department will be outsourced in the near future. I would not recommend working here

Some hype some substance

Pros

Academic life, potential to form new connections, as compared to regular colleges, if you want to teach in the STEM field, you will find many students who want to learn the subject.

Cons

Top management has turned education into a business. The school exists to appease their students in order to receive favorable reviews. The chief financial officer (in fact all the top brass) are more interested in filling their own pockets than educating students. Case in point, the CFO has a clause written in his agreement that he gets a percentage of the money 'he' saves WPI annually. Remember, he is the one responsible for keeping the numbers....Like most other academic institutes, the college has become 'top heavy'. Too many administrators and the professors are given larger class loads each year and are penalized for not passing/keeping students happy.
