Pros

None. I was a fool thinking I could make a career at MHCD.

Cons

Tyrannical Management, enables clients with little actual treatment, unsafe workplace, cronyism and corruption. I was an employee there for three years and my overall experience was negative. Middle management is corrupt and they are not afraid to retaliate against their employees. If you bring new ideas to the table and or point out major issues, you risk immediate termination. I feel this can be reviewed by their high turnover rate and countless debates with Union Members. In fact, the Union filled a charge against MHCD with the National Labor Union's Board for illegal behavior for refusing to bargain appropriately during salary negotiations. Likewise, Mental Health Center of Denver spent the most on executives, and the least on non-executive employees, percentage-wise in comparison to nearby agencies this year. To Upper management, I would like to say I feel that most of you are petty, narcissistic, power hungry, fools who are so apathetic and detached from what you actually do, I pity you. For the longer term employees who like this company, I just want to thank you. You do a lot for those who need mental health resources in the community and thank you for the difference you make. However, this company was not for me and I am actually leaving the Healthcare field after my time here.Take care.

Clarification on Top Workplace recognition: For the past 6 years, an employee (outside of Human Resources and top management) has nominated Mental Health Center of Denver to participate in the Denver Post newspaper’s Best Places to Work in Denver program. The Denver Post surveys employees by using an independent third-party survey company. Mental Health Center of Denver pays no money for this survey process to either the Denver Post nor the survey company. The results of the survey are based solely on employee feedback via the survey, and employee participation is completely voluntary. As an employer with over 500 employees, Mental Health Center of Denver competes for the Top 25 best workplace honors with large, for-profit employers such as petroleum, real estate, insurance, telecommunication, and finance companies. For 6 years in a row, our non-profit organization been honored as a Top Workplace. This honor truly belongs to all employees who work together as a collaborative team to serve our community and fulfill our mission of enriching lives and minds.

Pros

Centrally located, clean, free parking, free coffee.

Cons

Upper management penalizes staff without meeting with them to address issue. If you keep your mouth shut and smile a lot you will do well. If you point out serious problems that need to be fixed, or disagree with management on any point, you risk immediate termination. I have seen that happen to nearly a dozen staff members as well as myself. The addicts and homeless are on the honor system and are simply asked if they have any weapons or drugs in their pockets, of course they always say no, then later they are cutting themselves or overdosing on pills. Patients who have assaulted or stalked staff are not banned, because it is "due to their illness," and we can over bill Medicaid whenever they come into the building to yell at us or expose themselves. We are not allowed to warn other staff about the patient with hepatitis B who likes to spit at staff, or the patient who carries 2 knives and has repeatedly threatened to murder staff, because it "violates their right to privacy." And this is why half the counselors are on anti-anxiety meds.
