Good place to learn, but stay away if you can

Pros

Excellent place to learn if you are interested in the power business, especially in areas of power engineering and operations. TransAlta owns coal, gas, hydro and wind generation and has some of the leading experts in Alberta for each of these technologies. Many influential people in the power business today are ex-TransAlta employees and the company has a tremendous history in Alberta.

Cons

The company has been in lay-off mode since at least 2012, so people have been in constant fear of losing their jobs. This has killed morale and created a toxic environment where bad behaviors are rewarded. Be prepared to work long hours. Staff reduction has meant the people left have been doing the work of 2 and sometimes 3 people. Pay freezes and benefits reduction means people have been working more for less. A review of company financial statements will show the huge debt the company has. It really isn't manageable given current market conditions unless assets are sold or the government provides a bail out. The company has been fined by regulators in recent years for market manipulation. Processes have changed, but attitudes haven't. If you end up working here, make sure you take all the training related to market manipulation and protect yourself by documenting everything.

Pros

If you can ensure the chaos for a short period of time, doors will open at superior shops. Working at TA is a spring board to better opportunities, in a very short period of time. Start applying for jobs early ( within the first 6 months - watch the interview requests roll in. Take your pick.

Cons

At the time, I saw what I am about to list as cons, but looking back, these were gifts: Incompetent, out of touch C-Suite. Disorganized management. Great example of how *not* to run an organization. Relative to (consistently) negative EPS, this does not seem to affect the increasing remuneration package of Senior Executive Officers, particularly Dawn Farrell, as employee pay has stagnated for years (so I have heard). The positive of the 'cons': You're doing three jobs, and working 12 hour days; this translates to industry knowledge, second to none - the springboard for your next move, outside of TA. I hopped over to TC Energy - more than double the pay; the job feels easy in comparison.

Pros

-Most lateral level employees are great to work with -The weekend, and time not spent at work

Cons

-Severely under resourced; not enough hours in the day to complete all of your work. Bright, competent employees either leave to the competitors, become workaholics and stay, or start saying 'no', and give up home of ever getting promoted. -Employees are not valued, nor does management care to work with employees to create more effective strategies to manage excessive departmental workloads. The only acceptable answer from an employee to a manager is 'sure, no problem'; very authoritarian style management, hidden behind an insincere smile. -Many of us have worked for the competition - there are better options. Working here is costly to your health and personal life. -No backup support - when a senior employee leaves, it's often the case that no one else knows how to do his / her job. The work is redistributed to existing employees (again, very under resourced). There are not enough hours in the day to cross train. -Management lack the soft skills to be effective - the SVP in our department regularly screams at her assistant, and drops the F bomb. -This may sound repetitive, but the management are not open to feedback - you would have more luck trying to reason with a brick wall.
