      Time for new leadership at TechSoup

      Pros

      I have been working at TechSoup full-time as a Senior Director for more than 5 years. Many committed colleagues and an organization which in the past added much value to the nonprofit sector.

      Cons

      Poor cross-functional communication and leadership. Lack of well-defined strategic direction with a CEO that micro-manage everything in the organization.

      Atrocious management

      Pros

      The staff who are lower on the ladder are extremely dedicated to the mission, and put up with a lot of indignities to be here.

      Cons

      Where to start? The leadership which has mostly all been in place more than 20 years runs this place like a kingdom. Decisions are handed down, even high level managers and VPs are left out of the loop and not invited to provide any input whatsoever. Staff are set up to fail with outdated systems and unrealistic goals, and blamed when they do fail. Months after a recent round of layoffs and "restructuring", no accountability for problems has been taken by leaders, and no plan has been presented to right the ship because none exists. These are wholly unserious people who's real mission is to maintain their big salaries and the prestige that comes with making giant unsubstantiate claims about TechSoup's impact.

      Pros

      Really great mission and some really amazing people. When you hear the credentials and background of some of the staff they are really impressive. The talent Techsoup has attracted is pretty jaw dropping. There is also some great stuff happening even though creativity is stifled, some gets through and there are some impressive historical points. Some cool stuff happening internationally

      Cons

      Techsoup is a wonderful organization that does great things around the world. It also is a place that is 100% disconnected from its mission. It’s all about revenue. It is a business parading about pretending to be a nonprofit. The VPs are totally committed to only themselves and do not care about front line or junior employees. Crazily, they know all of this and don’t care, they promoted a person who was so ineffective and had so many complaints and issues that they were replaced and moved to a position with no supervision responsibilities and then turned around and promoted them to VP? Unfortunately, failing up is not uncommon. The founder and voting board member works 2 days a month but yet makes a $200,000 salary (check their 990) all while they have announced no raises now or in the future (there is supposedly a bonus system coming?). Speaking of the founder – seeing the negativity on Glassdoor he has been pressuring people around the office to post positive reviews to counter the truth on the reviews section, I heard this with my own ears. The CEOs staff runs around belittling people and calling them names while barking they they are a "leader" and keeps getting promoted. It is all very sad. It is a nice place with a great mission but they shut down the creation of new programs or new ideas to become a nonprofit (for nonprofits – they are strongly pro profit) Staples. Staples is probably a more pleasant place to work. So out of touch. So stogy. Run, honestly, run.

      Thank you for acknowledging our great mission and amazing people – we pride ourselves on our ability to attract and retain tenured, top talent. Public charities such as TechSoup need to have funding to carry out their critical social missions and can’t be sustained without it, and while 990 filings are a good source of information, it’s important to know they are two years in arrears. Many may not be aware that TechSoup’s founder, Daniel Ben-Horin, transitioned to a part-time consultant role in April 2017 and continues to drive key development and expansion opportunities for TechSoup nationally and internationally. We believe in giving our employees opportunities to learn and lead as well as the requisite support for on-going improvement and career advancement.
