Pros

Fast hiring, you get paid.

Cons

Stepful is the worst company I’ve ever worked for. Pay is $17–$18 an hour, which is insulting for the stress and abuse you deal with daily. Students constantly curse you out because management and coaches refuse to return calls, leaving all the anger on support. Escalated calls? Managers dodge them. Learning Coaches barely respond, turnover is constant, and favoritism is obvious—only certain employees get overtime. Micromanagement is extreme, even a 10-minute break gets docked. Many work 12-hour shifts with no real lunch. The phones are chaos: billing, complaints, externships, withdrawals, tech support—all dumped on one line. It’s a 1099 role with no protections, no real OT, and no accreditation except pharmacy technician. I was lied to about call volume, taking 50–70 calls a day, not 5. No proof of ID or SSN required to work—fraudulent. This is a sweatshop, mentally draining and abusive. My only regret is not hanging up more.

Pros

This is a true high-growth startup environment, which means things move quickly and there are definitely periods of intensity. For the right person, though, that pace is energizing rather than draining. The team is incredibly mission-driven, collaborative, and focused on solving real problems that directly impact students’ lives and career opportunities. Operations especially gets exposure to a wide range of challenges and meaningful ownership early on.

Cons

If you’re looking for a predictable or low-pressure environment, this probably isn’t the right fit.

Pros

- Everyone is in this mess together so you do meet some cool people. - Hybrid policy.

Cons

Senior management really needs to learn how to run effective meetings. Right now it’s a lot of the same conversation happening across three different meetings just to get managers up to speed, when most of it could honestly just be a quick message in Slack. It’s a complete waste of time. It also feels like manager's calendars are packed with meetings for the sake of it, like a way to show activity more than actual progress. I don’t fully blame them, this kind of thing usually comes from the culture leadership sets. At a higher level, the team needs stronger senior execs who can actually steer things forward. There’s too much yes-man energy running around the office right now!!!!, too many people telling the CEO what they want to hear instead of what they need to hear.
