Lack of Communication and Spontaneous, Reactionary Management

Pros

The people that work here are extremely intelligent. Every day with the team is inspiring and has personally fostered growth. The culture, while it may be too casual at times, is fun, relaxed, and energetic. The office space is older, but it feels comfortable and Springbox does try to accommodate needs when they arise (comfy spaces to get away, snacks, more meeting rooms, etc...). Processes are also being worked on and it feels like teams are actively trying to solve process issues and create some sort of structure.

Cons

Leadership is so out of touch the rest of the company. Revenue is pushed as the sole motive to work harder and harder, leaving inspiring motives like innovation, creativity, and personal development to the wayside. In fact, themes like these are only discussed in correlation to driving new business to Springbox. Timelines for projects are constantly accelerated leaving people scrambling to finish work for the sake of meeting internal business goals. Quality of work is sacrificed for revenue goals due to lack of planning by leadership - and it has not improved in months. Few people are working overtime while others have little to no work. There is no balance with work distribution, only favoritism. HR approaches hiring and people management from a cold and apathetic perspective. We never see or hear from HR unless someone is being fired, or there is a major policy change. Leadership tends to place the blame of company issues on the employees, alluding to employees not working enough hours instead of owning up to the obvious workflow and communication problems.

An Experience I Won't Forget

To say my experience at Springbox was bad would be an understatement. With a few notable exceptions (the Chief Vision Officer and a few females at the Director/AD level), the leadership team at Springbox is woefully ill-equipped to lead, grow or maintain a positive work environment. In my time at Springbox, I was treated poorly by multiple members of the leadership team in attacks that were directed more at my person, than at my performance. There is little consequence for management that mistreat women. There is also little consequence for nepotism. With one notable exception, individuals in management who maintain friendships with top leadership do not suffer consequences for their poor quality of work and lack of work ethic. There is an attitude amongst leadership that employees just need to get things done, regardless of best practice or quality. This behavior and attitude leave individual contributors to pick up the pieces when everything goes wrong, as it almost always does. In multiple instances, the leadership of the organization came forward asking employees to work extra hours, "hire a babysitter," miss time with family, and to work over the holidays to make deadlines on projects that were not adequately scoped or sold. When employees agreed and worked additional hours or over holidays, there was no compensation or acknowledgment of shortcomings in planning to ensure these kinds of requests did not become the norm. I do not believe Glassdoor is a forum that is appropriate to call people out by name but if you are applying or interviewing at this company, take a good look at individuals in the organization who are in leadership roles in Product/Sales, parts of Experience, Project Management, and Development. In regards to HR, while members of this team are and have been kind and empathetic, they have zero power and affect zero change. It is a shame that the leadership of this organization leaves such a dark cloud over the experience of many of its past employees. Some incredibly talented and intelligent individuals have worked for, or are currently working for Springbox, but they will not get the growth opportunities or recognition that they deserve. When considering a job at Springbox, it is essential to understand that you will have little chance of learning new skills, having your voice or frustrations heard and taken seriously, receiving a raise or adequate compensation, and an opportunity to improve what is currently a very flawed model. Please note, this experience is not an isolated incident.

Pros

Company culture is great and the people i worked with are some of the brightest individuals i've ever worked with. Unlimited PTO is always a plus as well

Cons

Every department is out for the best interest of themselves. There truly lacks cohesion as whole and everyone is trying to save their own butts to avoid the next wave of layoffs. There has been a change of leadership that has led to a HUGE amount of people leaving the company(atleast 30%) and hitting our profit goals became more important than the actual work we produce. It was a real bummer because they have the potential but as you have read in other reviews, it starts with Leadership. With no ability to align on the direction of the company, this has led to team vs team battles and closed door conversations. Its disappointing because i was hoping for a lot more. This company is trending in the wrong direction and has been for the last 9 months now.

Sure, we have dogs in the office and plenty of ping-pong, but we know (and we appreciate you recognizing) that’s not what it takes to do great work. While it is easy to recognize where we excel, we’re very open to how we can improve and I’d like share a few of the ways we are doing so that directly address your specific concerns. Over the past 9 months, we have fundamentally restructured and rebuilt our senior leadership team with the addition of several key roles. These pivotal moves have enabled our organization to focus first on our people, ensuring they have the time and space to do the best work of their career here. Doing our best work begins with removing barriers. In the first quarter of this year, we tackled many of these head on. We found our sweet spot in the middle market and aligned our organization around a clear company mission and vision. We established a set of core values to guide behavior and launched these with a bang at our full-company annual offsite. (We celebrate these values every Monday morning in the form of gratitude recognition to individuals at our All Hands, All Hearts meeting.) We combined our technology expertise and passion for purpose-driven work by partnering with The Promiseland Project to bring purpose back to America, through in-kind resources. We kicked off an intense four-part managerial training series that is mandatory for all employees with direct reports, including quarterly manager performance reviews. We facilitated our first Annual Career Development program, positioning every employee into a clear career path with defined responsibilities, goals, performance expectations and training opportunities. And we’re not stopping here. Q2 begins with a new set of objectives and goals that will keep us on the path of making Springbox a hard place to get into and even harder place to leave.
