THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU JOIN

Pros

Location, work-life balance, nice colleagues (if you are lucky)

Cons

To my fellow Singaporeans, I urge you to think twice before joining this company. The company has strong Chinese culture, and you may feel like a minority even in your own country. While it may be a good option for those looking for a retirement plan, it's not a company to consider if you want to climb the corporate ladder. There is no career progression, and promotions are typically reserved for their "own people," regardless of your performance. Additionally, bonuses are determined by people from HQ whom you don't work with, and you may never understand how your grade was determined or what you can do to improve it. Moreover, if you have a micromanaging manager, the work environment can be suffocating, and you may not have any say in the work you do. You may find yourself doing only administrative work with limited opportunities to learn and grow. It's crucial not to be deceived by what you see on job websites. Proceed with caution when considering this company.

Pros

They are a top Fortune Global 500 co (that's what you will hear from them on the daily basis). Good work-life balance. Free lunch is provided. Strong PRC culture, 99% Chinese speaking. Meeting, reports all spoken/written in Mandarin, you will feel like you are working in China! Great place to learn mandarin.

Cons

Job is not difficult, but people will make it difficult for you here. You will need to fight to get your points across. People are very rude, they talk very loudly and rudely. "buck passing' is prevalent and get rewarded by the Management as well! Very shocking culture to local employees. Management has no intention to promote local staffs much, most management are expatriates from China. Local staffs here are second graded. Bad behaviors will be rewarded or encouraged. The louder wins. Toxic working culture, local employees whom used to be nice after joining for awhile will turn nasty like them. Expatriates they sent here to manage do not always have the relevant working experience. For instance, they may get some non professional staffs from HQ to lead the professional team here.

Sinopec as an Oil & Gas Company is misdirected

Pros

Before Sinopec took over Daylight Energy, it was a great place to work. They offered competitive benefits and generous salaries. The staff were engaged in the tasks and everyone knew about the goals of the organization. Political game players did not dictate the work demographic. People worked for the success of the organization. While the salaries and benefits have not changed with Sinopec, the company culture has changed.

Cons

Sinopec suffers from a lack of future direction and poor upper management decisions. Mostly, Sinopec is a "top heavy" organization with a lot of VP's and not so many people to actually do the work. The is a symptom of being owned by a Chinese international corporation which handcuffs the management's ability to make decisions. All decisions, big or small, need to filter to Head Office in Beijing. Head office has a lack of oil and gas experience and therefore detailed information and endless justification is required. The working atmosphere is very frustrating and the political game players have taken over the corporate culture.
