No career progression

Pros

Nothing. A lot of workload and have to work during public holidays.

Cons

1) You will not be rewarded by performing your own job well, instead, you have to perform others' jobs to shine. 2) Direct management is a big problem when the management does unfair treatment. 3) Lack of opportunities for career development for staff. Staff will stuck at the same posts for many years. Like me, stuck in my current position and post for a number of years. When staff ask for internal transfer, there is too many restrictions whether any replacement before the management can release the staff to a new department. Because of this there is no career advancement, staff will choose to leave to pursue another career.

Pros

Strong mission and excellent work culture (teamwork and camaraderie), meaningful work, variety of job scope and rotation of duties, and extraordinary career.

Cons

- Career progression and personal development has become really lacking in recent years where little due consideration is given to officers' competencies and specialised expertise. There is an annual posting cycle, however officers who found themselves with no match would have to wait for ad-hoc job postings to surface, rely on their own interpersonal networks to secure their next postings, or be force-posted. The situation is even worse for seconded officers who may find themselves returning to SPF with no job posting and are either force-posted or asked to take no-pay leave. - HR administration and management is fragmented and siloed (within SPF, and between SPF and MHA as its parent ministry), causing frustration in every aspect. - I have seen many experienced and competent officers (including at senior levels) leave the Force in the past 5 years. When I left, there was not even a exit interview except for a generic electronic survey which I wonder if anyone reads. That says a lot about staff retention I guess.

Pros

This job can be fulfilling as you investigate cases and serve justice to the victims. Joining with passion can be great at the start but you need to remember your purpose and with determination you’re able to survive here. Many have walked through and done the same, so don’t let the workload scare you, it can be managed well if you have time management and case management. You can be exposed to a diverse range of experiences, ranging from fights to deaths. You will be able to learn a wide variety of skills, from conflict resolution to analysis skills where details matter in an investigation.

Cons

Workload can be high, but with proper case management and discipline, you can keep the cases within a reasonable range. Working hours can be long if there are cases to run, but that doesn’t happen often and generally you work office hours if you’re not on shift. Career progression can be slow as it’s a government service. You’ll need to put in more effort to shine by doing electives outside of your core job.
