Pros

- Mostly good colleagues who are talented and hard working - Decent starting compensation - Nice office location - Open and decent founders represent the culture of old

Cons

- The product doesn't work! - Poor benefits in relation to other tech businesses. - Lack of compensation growth once you join. Signal is not unique in this respect, but there was no growth or performance process, with awards made behind closed doors - Underperforming but highly compensated sales team. The market is tough, but multiple sales personnel have been promoted again and again without delivering any sales...perhaps there is another metric for success. - A strong and good culture when I started in 2015 has been eroded by new execs and the loss of the original HR and culture leader. - Some elements of development are difficult to work with, and fail to take responsibility for poorly implemented products. (some are very good though!) - Slow to manoeuvre, if at all. - High turnover. People leave or get fired often. You usually find out if someone got fired via gossip rather than any official announcement. Firings are often swept under the carpet. - Restructuring happens often, usually to promote somebody in sales and find them some people to manage. - An unstable product that fails more often than it works, with slow resolution times and partners often blamed for Signal's own failings. - The few clients who have been acquired are often on lofty promises that client delivery teams cannot do. - Compliance with local laws is...questionable. - How many VPs does it take to change a lightbulb?

We appreciate your candor and passion for Signal. Let me address some of your points for candidates reading this. We fully acknowledge that yes, our culture has evolved as our business has evolved. We’re no longer a start-up trying to innovate; we’re an Identity leader trying to grow. This does mean that some great people who thrive in start-ups will move on. It also means that restructuring happens as we learn how to best serve our new Identity clients; and that the demands of doing business on an international scale require increased engagement from all members of our team. We have a unique entrepreneurial culture at Signal and those roots run fairly deep. So much so that our tenure rates for our engineering team exceed the industry average. Just this past week we celebrated HackWeek with more than 40 presentations, new ideas, and smiles shared over a week of speakers and company outings. Those of us here believe in what we’re doing, and feel proud to be a part of this team. We believe in the incredible work and innovation by the product and engineering teams. We’re excited to continue on this path and optimize our Identity offering. And, as we continue to grow and weather important changes to set us up for success, we remain committed to making Signal a great place to work.

Pros

- Snacks - Good health insurance - Decent dental and vision - Unlimited vacation (bitter sweet I only took a week off) - Remote flexibility - Nice sunlit office - Convenient location - I learned a lot in my brief time there. The challenges were at times immense but getting through them made me better at my job and more hirable for my next gig - Standing desk upon request - Packed stationary closet - Emergency deodorant if you were having a smelly day - Lots of happy hours and free meals - Smart and fun colleagues - My immediate boss was amazing. A real advocate and incredibly intelligent

Cons

I experienced more discrimination at this work place than any other place I have worked - After some transparent conversations it became clear there were pay discrepancies solely based on my social identity - All the people of color were either fired or left my immediate team during the course of my time at the company - At one point I was the only person of color on my team and I was treated very differently than my white counterparts, unfortunately. I was given a disproportionate amount of responsibility without appropriate acknowledgement. Instead, I was berated or reprimanded by upper management in front of my teammates - The company as a whole is struggling deeply. In the months I was there the CTO left, the founder/CMO quit out of the blue without saying a word, the newly appointed CMO quit, the VP of engineering quit, the most tenured workers all quit. The CEO is a sweet kind man but with the upper management being so unstable I don’t know how long the company will be around unless there is a radical shift in revenue and management Some stats and facts from the most recent layoffs that I calculated, 10/4/2018: - 100% of queer women of color were laid off - 50% of queer men of color were laid off - 50% of the women engineers were laid off - 1/3 of people of color at the company were laid off - Of the total recent layoffs 75% of the people were from a marginalized group in tech No 401 K match

Pros

Nice office, great perks, great people.

Cons

The company has few happy clients. Two rounds of layoffs in one year and most people are looking to get out before another. Product is stale. Vision for the future is murky. The new "fixer" CEO has few solid ideas and the walls keep crumbling around her. There might not be anything left before a direction is taken.
