Lack of Growth and Processes

Pros

A good mixture of talent and tenure. The technology concepts are good and the cash cow IBM keeps the doors open. Employs many former military.

Cons

12yrs in business and it still runs like a Mom and Pop shop. Development team doesn't follow any SDLC or methodologies to release product. Dev team doesn't baseline or freeze code to stabilize and build and burn down defects to mature product. They are on VC funding and don't have any paying customers other than IBM. They lack release management and have pilots that don't turn into revenue.

Best job I've had

Pros

I've started my career with this company, and have moved into positions that require more responsibility. I get to shape what the software looks like and how it functions. My salary is competitive for any other similar position. I get to work almost any hours I please, except for when I'm needed for specific office hours. I work with people who are motivated to get the software right. I have meetings with superiors who listen to my reasoning for a specific request, and usually heed my advice. The times they haven't, were after discussions where I agreed I was wrong. No one I work with has pulled rank to shut me down or talk down to me. Everyone talks together to get the right moves made.

Cons

Along with the flexible hours comes working some times you might rather not. Sometimes I've had to work over holidays or pull long hours. It's not extremely frequent, but it does happen. As with all software shops, we want the product done, and we want it yesterday. Sometimes the expectation on what quality of software we can achieve with a provided estimate is overshot.
