Pros

Lots of autonomy and things to learn. Smart people all around. Seemed like a very positive work environment for some roles, particularly engineers.

Cons

My time at Rockerbox was characterized by uncertainty about what my role actually was, as goals shifted regularly or seemed to be forgotten. Didn’t have a strong manager. Overall, communication was truly horrendous. The manager I did have was extremely critical and made me feel like complete garbage in most 1-1s, even though he had zero experience in the type of work I did/how it fits into an org structure, and it’s funny how I’ve been so much more successful ever since I left. Favoritism was pretty obvious from the get-go which I found frustrating. Regarding all these comments around work/life balance, this should be taken seriously. Your health and happiness matter more than a silly tech company that prob won’t be around in 5 years. There are plenty of other jobs out there. Be somewhere that values you and respects your boundaries. Life’s too short. If you feel obligated to work around the clock that's a company culture problem.

Pros

The team at Rockerbox is made up of many go-getters, and nice and hardworking folks. People are eager to learn, grow, and collaborate. Since the team is smaller and newer, everyone is given a seat at the table to input their ideas, which is rare at larger companies. You also get to wear many hats, which can be a pro or a con depending on what you’re looking for.

Cons

A flexible work environment with unlimited PTO, a lot of new things to learn, and a team and management full of go-getters sounds great at first, but if not done correctly can actually create a very stressful work environment. People usually work outside of the 9-5 schedule, with meetings and work to get done from early morning until past dinner time. It isn’t “required” but since people do schedule or request meetings late and there’s always so much to do, it becomes inevitable. It’s easy to burnout and hard to say no. If you are willing to give your all to this job, sacrificing personal time and freedom (ironic because the job supposedly boasts freedom and flexibility with unlimited PTO), you can definitely learn and grow a lot in this role. However, that does come with a cost.

Pros

Rockerbox was a great place to work for a lot of years. Really smart motivated team who are constantly building

Cons

Terrible management, no growth opportunities and super cheap. The founders are bootstrapped and proud of that but under estimated the competitors raising and catching up to what they built. No remote perks even though they are a fully remote company
