Do not trust the shill review

Pros

There are still several amazing talented people that work at RBC. Some of the projects are very interesting and challenging.

Cons

The review that stated "Over the past year, they have gotten rid of some problem people" is a lie and very insulting to these talented individuals. Granted, one or two were bad apples, but a lot of these people have been some of the best I have worked with. Some left of their own accord due to frustrations with how the company was being (mis)managed. Others have been caught up in significant layoffs that are usually not spoken of by management. I ignored the previous reviews prior to my employment as disgruntled employees, but they were right. RBC has a very high turnover rate. In the past year I can think of more than a dozen people that I had direct contact with that have been laid off. Most of these people recently had very good reviews from their managers. The interviews now no longer have panel discussions with your future team members. This is very telling on how secretive and distant the management has become. You will find that RBC will get a contract, over-hire, go over budget, then blame others for the mistakes and lay off several team members to try to save face and money. It is a very toxic work environment.

Although HR responds to posts, the posts themselves are written anonymously by current or past employees. Due to business need, there were layoffs. The layoffs were a business decision, they were unfortunate and they weren't taken lightly, as all of the affected employees made contributions to make RBC what it is today. RBC hasn't had a layoff in several years and we don't plan to have more. To clarify, there were 7 affected employees, not more than a dozen. The decision to cut peers from the interview process was made not to be secretive and distant, but to cut down on the time taken in the hiring process. It's unfortunate to hear you are not happy in your work. We encourage all employees to talk to either HR or management if they're unhappy and ask for the reason behind the decisions that are made if clarification is needed. Our employees are important to us and if there are improvements that can be made to make their work life better, we want to know what those are so we can act on them.

Swirling down the drain...

Pros

The engineering group includes individuals that are some of the most talented, intelligent, and fun people to work with and are able to produce results under a lot of pressure.

Cons

As previously stated, the CEO is definitely one of the most difficult people to work for (and he will spend a great deal of time ensuring that you know you work FOR him and never WITH him). Being that it is a smaller company, the executive team seems to operate under the notion that they'll be a Fortune 500 company soon enough and tries to operate as such. Big business models don't work for small businesses, and it's evident in lack of growth in projects and dwindling list of clientele. Also as previously stated, the AJI Network is (now, but not always) a voluntary opportunity for professional networking, the culture embedded at RBC resulting from what was "taught" at these very expensive semi-annual to quarterly "conferences" in California have not furthered any growth opportunities for the rest of the company, but only for those employees (mostly the executives) that are "strongly encouraged" to join per the CEO's request. It's not fair, and most of what they teach is often what can be found in a typical graduate-level business administration class (but for 4 times the cost). The wage gap is apparent not only between the executive team and other groups within the company, but even between men and women doing the same job. It was an incredibly difficult and awkward environment to work in, and a lot of changes need to be made internally.

You are correct, we have a fantastic team of engineers! As an employee for RBC myself, I have not found the CEO to be difficult to work for. He is engaged in the status and results of projects, as would be expected of a CEO, but is open to dialogue with the employees. When addressing the big business models referenced in your comment; the company nearly doubled in size in less than two years and as the employee base becomes larger, it becomes necessary to establish procedures to maintain consistency, as we continue to acquire new projects. Wages are evaluated every year and are based on comparable salaries for similar positions. Although there are several factors that go into determining an employee's wage, gender is not one of them.

High turnover, strange workplace

Pros

Some good people work at the company, and the work is interesting. There is a lot of variety in the types of projects. The environment is fast-paced. Medical is interesting. Benefits are excellent. Good parking. The office backs up to trees.

Cons

The company has lost 20% of the workforce over the past 6 months through a combination of voluntary and non-voluntary departures. A significant number of remaining employees are looking for other work. There is a lack of communication within the company - for example employees or customers leave with no one being made aware. Big name customers tend to do one project with the company, but repeat business is rare.
