Don't Fall For It

Pros

A bond established between coworkers through shared misery.

Cons

This is the start up of your nightmares. An egotistical CEO who chases down and hunts every good person that has walked through the doors of that hellish warehouse and destroyed their confidence, work product and every shred of humanity they possessed. Pair this with a group of employees who are so desensitized to the abuse that they rarely glance up when the CEO screams, throws things and pouts his way through the workday. Silence is the language of employees and perhaps a few raised eyebrows when people cry openly at their desks after enduring another tirade by the CEO. There's a reason they can't keep employees and entire departments are run by a single person. Sometimes the only way to make it through the day was to either cry or start drinking at 3pm. In my time there, I saw multiple employees quit and entire departments collapse. I witnessed sheer narcism destroy solid work and limit the ability of the company to grow. Work/life balance is only something wish you could achieve. You'll stare at your phone and see the Instagram feeds of your friends out for a drink while you stay up until 2am trying to complete a project that shouldn't have been sold in the first place. The real tragedy is that the CEO is actually a pretty smart and fun guy (when you're not working with him) but he has a horrific temper paired with an ego that could rival the current President. If he could simply serve as a thought leader/founder type he would likely see the vision come to fruition. You don't want to live this nightmare my friend. Stay far, far away. And if you decide not to heed this advice, make sure you have at least 3 months backup salary stored in your savings account because you will come out of the fog, realize you're having a real life workplace nightmare and get out of there as soon as you possibly can.

Pros

Love the cool work space. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed. Work with a lot of really sharp thinkers. We're all empowered to solve problems and deeply respected for what we offer as professionals. Kitchen is well stocked with snacks, bevies to keep us going strong, and beer on tap and wine for in house happy hours. There is great flexibility for vacations and sometimes working from home if you work hard. Haven't heard a no to any time off request. Ken (CEO, Co-Founder) shows he really cares about the business and his team's happiness. You want to give People Patten your best. No BS.

Cons

I've worked in more outgoing friendly places, but I think people greet or talk to each other here less because most everyone is often very focused on their work. I'd also speculate that half of the people here are on the Asperger's syndrome spectrum (myself included). Socially awkward brainy people isn't that terrible a thing to deal with though. A lot of Oasis and general Brit pop is played in the office, but anyone can play DJ and mix it up or wear headphones.

Pros

$$ The physical office is great! Once series A funding came in, the CEO hired the top designer in Austin to come in and pimp this decrepit east Austin warehouse (they used to sell industrial supplies here or something!). It's cool, funky, and eclectic (none of the furniture matches!) But don't worry, we still have some funding left. All our furniture was found on Craig's List by our CEO himself! $$ If you are a data scientist, this IS THE PLACE! So many data scientist roles here. Close to half the company are data scientists (what other startup invests in science like that?!?!), and we all love the academic environment established by our Chief Data Officer. It's a big sand box! Science, baby! No restrictions of rigid product road maps like so many other companies have. We can play around and experiment without the pressure of having to deliver a production platform. That's why you bring in the VCs (and ours is hands off - Awesome Sauce!). $$ Unlike most start-ups, this is NOT a cheesy Sales culture like Wolf of Wall Street. Out of 20 people, only one guy is a salesperson. $$ Free lunch two days a week! $$ Everyone has the same mindset. You don't have to worry about dealing with people whose opinions about politics and religion are different from the founders (and wrong!). $$ The music! Our cofounders rock Spotify! And all our conference rooms are named after Oasis. I don't remember when they were still together in the 80s, but after hearing their music played all the time - it's dope! $$ Benefits! We all have really great opportunities to participate in a stock option plan (assuming you are not let go the day before your options vest). The company has been around two years, and our promised options have not been formalized by our CEO. I'm not concerned though. He's not the type to give anyone the short end.

Cons

The snack options are sometimes weak. We have lots of Topo Chico, but not enough candy
