Pros

1.Stable paycheck 2.Health insurance benefits 3.Helping marginalized people (low income, immigrants, ppl with housing or food insecurity) was very rewarding and made me very happy. 4. Some of the people I worked with are great people. 5.Some Library Patrons are great and can teach you something. 6 The research part of creating library programs was rewarding and fun. 7. Community engagement and meeting people that was fun.

Cons

1.If you are ambitious, helpful and hard worker like myself they will reward you with increase in work load more than your peers. With no pay raise to try and burn you out both mentally and spiritually. 2.highly rigid & low vibrational energy environment 3. Most of my coworkers hated, ignored, discriminated against marginalized library patrons. 4. Institutional barriers of access to library services to marginalized people. 5. coworkers love to complain to each other about work and resolve nothing. 6. coworkers will gossip to you about people you don't know (toxic and unprofessional behavior). 7. the union did nothing to help me one time I asked for legitimate help. 8. employer does not care if you have a documented disability they will discriminate against you once you disclose you have a medical problem and need accommodation even with a Dr. letter. 9.Coworkers and customers served are homophobic, transphobic and they will push this hate agenda towards you even if you affirm your boundaries in a respectful manner. 10. after helping an elderly lady on the computer and scanner with a request she had with regards to an immigration issue, my coworker said in a serious and disappointed tone of voice, in a way to coach me to acclimate to work culture "don't be so helpful to the public because then they will expect us to be like you". (WOW). 11. Leadership will make mistakes and never take accountability for it but expect you to do so. 12. Their organizational behavior is toxic and inefficient. For instance, a man was acting very strange, stalking and tapping on coworkers car. I called the police non emergency line to get guidance on what to do. After instructed to lock the door management had a meeting to reprimand me and a silly pony show in which I was trained on the SOPs of safety. 13. HR made a mistake in my job classification and offered more pay, they never honored their word (had I known this before, I would have remained in my previous job). 14, You ask questions for clarification or express your grievances due to awful or unlawful behavior from customers, coworkers or others your branch manager does nothing to help you. 15. Your library branch manager is acting from a place of playing a political game to get a promotion at your expense and effort. 16. Some coworkers in the library have awkward social skills. 17. some coworkers can't understand sarcasm/sense of humor at work to make the day go by easier. 18. Library patrons are unpredictable and do something that can be disruptive, offensive and even life threatening to you or others. 19. The aforementioned #18 was not mentioned to me during the job interview or within the first week of on the job training. 20. Supervisor did not ask me how i felt with all the changes to my work assignment. 21. Supervisor asked me to work on my day off, and offered to buy me lunch. I agreed because I was scared to experience retaliation. Very inconsiderate oh and she never did actually buy me lunch. 22. A coworker may be disrespectful to you, try to sabotage you or just indirectly make your life difficult at work but because they have referent power (means unofficial power usually through tenure) they won't get fired or reprimanded (corrupt work culture) oh but somehow you suffer the consequences of a situation that was not even created by you. lol. 23. One of my coworkers hated library patrons suffering from housing insecurity. Two funny things is in the chain of jobs im her superior and two she's an immigrant herself by the way. My coworker directed me in Spanish "hey since you get along with these people go tell her to put clothes on" with a disgusted look on her face. My coworker was referring to a young lady wearing a sports bra and gym black tight pants, sitting quietly at a table not disturbing anyone. But I guess its a crime to be homeless in a library in Miami. 24. My supervisor gaslight me several times. My favorite was when I told her I have a disability, and was leading into asking for accommodation for the second time and she said "me too". The first time I asked her she said no.

Pros

On good days, it's a job that can help make a difference. You'll definitely be exposed to a lot of different cultures and personalities which can help you develop the skills to deal with all kinds of people.

Cons

The administration will not back you up, and will throw you under the bus if need be. They are out-of-touch with what the staff deal with on a day-to-day basis, leading to inane policies that make the job that much more difficult. Don't expect to get ahead if you don't please the right people.
