Hire an Employment Lawyer Before You Leave

Pros

Highly accessible to public transportation.

Cons

The only reason I'm writing this review is because of the highly unethical practices me as well as several other employees I've talked to that have been laid off or cut over the last couple years have experienced after we leave, not getting the money we owed on time or at all until. It is unacceptable for any company, no matter how big or small or how much financial trouble they are in to not pay the money it owes to its employees, especially with no warning or reasoning. It is highly unethical and illegal. It took many unanswered emails until I finally received my payment (very late). I talked to several other former employees who experienced the same exact thing. Some didn't get responses or their final paycheck until they threatened a lawsuit. I highly suggest any current employee preparing to leave Localytics have an employment lawyer ready so that when they don't pay you in a timely manner you can quickly recoup your wages owed. For a company that primarily hires people in their young 20's so they can keep their costs low it is shameful to try to take advantage of their lack of experience by not paying them after they leave. Many of these employees are dealing with the financial struggles that come with being in their early 20's. As for working at the company the biggest issue I ran into is that several of the managers in the company are highly immature and selfish in nature. To have multiple managers who only care about their image in the company and not the growth or advancement of their employees was one of the most frustrating experiences to be a part of. There is a good chance you will never have a conversation with your manager about where you want to go in your career. Again, for a company that primarily hires employees coming out of college it is an extreme disservice to them not to give them the managers and mentors they need to grow. Promotions for anyone not a manager or director is extremely rare. If you want happy customers I would suggest work on making the employees happy first. Career growth and professional advancement are far more effective at creating culture than a keg and ping pong table in the kitchen. At this time I cannot give the recommendation to work at Localytics.

Pros

Fair compensation for a startup. You can fly under the radar as there are so many underperforming employees companywide it's hard to stand out as being worse than them.

Cons

The leadership is the worst I've seen in my entire lifetime of employment and not just in startups. Biggest problem is a CEO that's in over his head and focused on the completely wrong areas. Frequently claiming to want to hear feedback only to fight you on your opinion, and input and do nothing when you provide valid suggestions for improvements to systems and communications currently in place. The sales culture is a startup Wolf of Wall Street. Partying and egos are on fully display everyday. There are 5 other co-founders none of which seem to do much at all besides make unprofessional advances at employees, while encouraging a sales culture thats full of jerks and celebrating the smallest victories. All of this while continuing to lose sight of the big picture of building a really big, successful company. Consistently changing direction and approach, disputing feedback while preaching transparency were the parts I found most frustrating. Along with the pure denial from the majority of the managers and directors, and lack of internal communications. The Dev team wants nothing to do with supporting paying customers and existing tools. Their only focus seems to be on trying to build new tools to sell (conceived by God knows who & based on what data) instead of focusing on maintaining and improving the existing tools which are presently at best half functional. Just ask some of our customers. This makes it embarrassing to represent Localytics to customers during most interactions.

Sharp people, crummy leadership, bad choices

Pros

Some great sales people, pockets of brilliance in customer success, smart engineering team. Great tech and good underlying product in a cool and important space. Awesome customer list. Most likely headed for a solid if not financially life-changing exit.

Cons

Founding team seems ego-driven, insincere, and unfocused on what matters. Blindspots around their personal value to the business are concerning at best. Many executive and middle management hires have been clueless people who worked at companies with successful exits. And we do not fire them when it becomes clear that they are ineffective. We pivoted into a smaller market, and are paying the price in terms of customer churn, lower bookings, bad product-market fit, and reduced ambitions. Post-layoff attrition is starting and many of smartest people with the best alternatives are leaving. Leadership has been slow to respond. And negative Glassdoor reviews/word on the street make it harder to hire.
