Lots of potential, poor culture and leadership

Pros

- Most of the team are great to work with. They are smart people who care about what they do and want to do the job well - The daily work is satisfying with good customers and a problem space within AI that is challenging - Work environment is flexible and the company has supported fully remote for many years even before COVID - People at the company genuinely want to make it better, they work hard and want it to succeed despite opposition

Cons

- Exec team is distrustful and suspicious of employees especially CEO Manu. Brian is COO even though he is listed as CEO on glassdoor - Lots of micro-management. There are hourly pings in slack if things aren't moving at the breakneck speed CEO wants. What he wants changes daily and contradicts itself - People are fired and disappear without warning. One day they are there the next they don't show up to a meeting and you have no idea why - The company values are used against people to validate harassment, long hours, and firing anyone who disagrees with the methods and direction of management. In particular 'craftsmanship' which was so misused, it became an inside joke - Scapegoating happens often. There has to be a villain: either a person or a whole team that is the problem with little accountability or ownership of the problem at the leadership level

Thanks for the feedback - we’re happy to hear you found the work satisfying while recognizing the very hard problem we’re trying to solve within the industry. Yes, our team is fully distributed globally, so emails and slack messages may come in late into the night- as we encourage our team to work when they’re most creative and effective - and as a company which thrives on asynchronous communications, our team knows that no response is expected or required at night or on weekends. When people leave the team, either voluntarily or involuntarily, it’s either because this ultimately wasn’t the right fit for them, they weren’t meeting the high bar we set for ourselves, or have had ongoing performance issues. It’s company policy to not share details of departures with the entire company out of respect for each and every employee. We do take feedback seriously and follow up with action items from anonymous employee feedback. The founders are continually investing in their growth and leadership skills and realize no one is exempt from making mistakes and are always striving to grow and learn from our mistakes.

Good company, poor leadership

Pros

+ Liberal remote work policy + Flexible and understanding people + Respect for work / life balance + Benefits packages + "Unlimited" time off

Cons

- No 401k matching - "Unlimited" time off - Lots of hyper-growing pains - Very poor, inexperienced leadership - Pay attention to the unnatural increase in positive reviews during the month of September 2021. This was in direct response to the CEO begging for positive reviews at an all-hands meeting, and the people close to him complying. There is a stark contrast between the reviews prior to this, and have skewed the current ratings to his direct benefit.

Toxic work environment, toxic management

Pros

Hard to say anymore considering the cons.

Cons

Manu Sharma (CEO) and executives are absolutely toxic and foster a toxic engineering culture. They DO NOT CARE about people. If they don't like you personally they will find any excuse to get rid of you. They think the best way to improve productivity is to fire people, and they fire people en mass on a regular basis. On the other hand, if you are close to them they will go to great lengths to protect you, even if you are a manager and have committed harassment against a subordinate. It is unclear if they even understand what software engineering entails, and the have no concept of how to manage a SaaS product. Manu is completely detached from the realities of engineering, and sees Peter Thiel as a role model. He surrounds himself with yes men and uses others as his attack dog. Executives will not accept that they are often wrong and make incomprehensible decisions daily. They frequently contradicts themselves in meetings, and lack the soft skills required to manage.
