Unusual culture for Silicon Valley

Pros

Free snacks and lunch; Cubicles instead of open floorplan; Alcohol abuse encouraged on Fridays; Can coast without worry as long as you are in Engineering or show appropriate respect to CEO.

Cons

Contract software development company in a small, niche market trying desperately to reposition as platform / solutions provider, without offering anything even comparable to competition. Culture is CEO-focused, with CEO acting as CFO, CMO, CSO, and GOD. Cronyism abounds, with backchannel communications over-riding assigned organizational responsibilites. Product quality is secondary to release schedule; release schedule is secondary to sudden urgent opportunities which never pan out. Much-publicized Executive Team brought in to woo VCs gone once VCs declined to invest.

Pros

Free lunches in the San Jose office. Higher initial salaries. Promised bonuses and options look great. Office opens at 10 am.

Cons

Strong insider culture that's near impossible to break into. All decisions occur in SJ main office, if you aren't there your toast. Beware of the "new market" jobs, if they don't get traction you and your group will disappear. Office hours extend to 7 or 8 at night.

Please see my other responses. Major culture evolution since early 2015. However, exec team is based in SJ, therefore is indeed the decision-making hub. Managers based outside SJ are tightly woven into the process. New products are developing... hours are late in SJ due to communications with APAC office -- we have a keen focus to include colleagues from APAC and EMEA -- so we sometimes have to have early morning and late night phone calls. All part of the global experience.

Pros

Unlimited PTO Free lunch Mon through Thu Nice colleagues (not management team) Flexible work hours and some very smart engineers to work with

Cons

All the good executives hired in 2015 to make this company grow and look more like a normal Silicon Valley company were all let go by the CEO a year later. Now the company is back to full control of the CEO again. Unclear direction, bad outlook, unachiveavle projects and troublesome products. Recent product launches were a mess. The company will only have success again if the CEO gives trust to the right people or it has a new leader. I feel bad for people still working there.
