Pros

International environment, good colleagues, nice location

Cons

Lowish pay if no European funding. Funding can run out after a fixed term if your Professor can't find more, but you might still not be done with your PhD. HR is not useful in student-Professor conflicts. Some Professors can be bullies. People play politics even in a Research environment. Bureaucracy increased in the last years.

Pros

None really that I can think of.

Cons

This place is rife with bureaucracy and discrimination. As a foreign student to Catalonia one has no real chance to start a career in academia or to seek to finish a PhD any time soon. In fact not speaking the local language will set one back despite the science being cutting edge, with publications in respected journals, etc...Advisors will not help, they will not seek to help with grants, they will not care about your well being. Here they definitely make foreigners feel like second class citizens.
