Do Not Work Here

Pros

Small departments so get to do a lot Free time (since there is not a solid client base) allows for generous work life balance

Cons

-Horribly understaffed, and none of the staff are trained properly -Lack of clients with substance and bad choices to take on as clients makes getting press hard, which then means you get reprimanded for not delivering -Managers are allowed to be abusive and scream and yell. Even after multiple first hand reports to higher management nothing is done -No praise given for any accomplishment -Pay is tens of thousands below industry standard -Do not observe normal holidays (Indigenous People's Day, MLK day, President's Day) -Lack of lower support staff (coordinators, etc) so staff have to handle responsibilities for 4-5 roles

Just Don't

Pros

Working remotely - literally nothing else.

Cons

Sales is leading the the new biz process. They say they have a "tool" that IDs emerging stories and story trends from reporters (Pssst...it's basically Google Alerts, but not as good or as reliable). Clients sign up thinking this will get them in top tier media on day 1, and are angry when they aren't. So most days are spent addressing client questions about not achieving results derived from questionable promises. And Management's solution for teams: be more creative and work harder. The clients, for the most part, are bottom of the barrel, that neither need or understand PR and aren't interested in learning about the process or how PR and communications can truly help them. They paid their money, so shut up and do the work. Because most clients don't last more than six months you're also constantly rolling on and off accounts. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this hot mess.

RUN & HIDE, AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Pros

Interview was fast...now I know why.

Cons

To say my experience at IDPR was terrible wouldn’t even scratch the surface. While there are some great people there sprinkled throughout the organization, the company is mismanaged from the CEO, down and is full of toxic employees. Be prepared to be belittled, micromanaged, talked down to, and God forbid you have an idea or suggest something new – it will fall on deaf ears and you’ll be hung out to dry as insubordinate. I’ve never seen an organization with such a low collective EQ. Your local kindergarten is likely better at conflict resolution than this joke of a company. Not only will every minute of your day be held under scrutiny, be prepared to be excluded from key meetings if you’re on an account and you’ll learn along-side the client. If you have any issues, concerns, or suggestions you’re better off keeping your mouth shut or you put a target on your back. You’ll be asked to write emails on behalf of your “people leaders” just for them to send it out under their name as if it’s their own, your pitches will be critiqued as you’re typing the sentence (not exaggerating or kidding), and if you’re not a part of the original team you’ll forever be the outsider. You can COMPLETELY FORGET your job description as you’ll soon take on the work others don’t want to do, you’ll be given an un-attainable time line to finish it, and then they’ll site “performance issues.” Turnover is high (you’ll see hundreds of open positions online). The pay and benefits are sub-par, with no 401k match. Clients are leaving in droves. Save yourself MASSIVE headaches and stress and pointless, un-fulfilling work. Saying goodbye to this organization was the single best thing I ever did for myself and my career.
