      Good atmosphere but little direction or opportunity to progress

      Pros

      Good atmosphere, most people are very friendly and approachable even across teams. The benefits are generous and the office locations (in London) are pretty central and easy to get to, lots of good places to eat around etc.

      Cons

      There is a significant minority of technical staff who have their noses stuck in the air, holier than thou attitudes etc. Also the management are not particularly approachable or helpful when you're in need of guidance or direction. There is little to no strategy, and this has been the case for the last 4 years, with no signs of change. Either this or the management are so conceited they won't disclose even the slightest details about strategy or direction of the company/product.

      The pay and pension arrangements are good.

      Cons

      Non-existent/evasive HR function. Bullying culture - not only accepted but rewarded - senior managers shouting at and abusing employees in public - information hiding - setting up individuals to fail. Incredibly weak management - always politicking. No leadership at all - job title is everything, competence not required. No internal succession planning - promotion by filling "dead men's shoes" - no training, no preparation, just whoever is most visible to a senior manager. Hence the politicking and bullying.

      Was great for first three years, now awful

      Pros

      In the early days, when Hive was distinct from centrica, it was a great place to work. A few misteps in agile and a lack of direction in senior management but generally fun, innovative, and with a positive culture. That's all gone now but the central london offices are good.

      Cons

      Centrica didn't know what they had and killed Hive by taking over and applying its own obsolete mentality to what was a promising start-up. Nowadays Hive is Centrica with a better logo.
