Not What It Claims to Be—Avoid at All Costs

Pros

Because it's on the smaller side, you'll likely (depending on your position) get some experience in areas of the business that you wouldn't get at larger organizations. It's great resume fodder to help you get a better position elsewhere.

Cons

This place used to be amazing and was everything it promoted itself to be: forward-thinking, innovative, transparent, fun, inspiring, open to new ideas, etc. But that was under the founder and former CEO. This company has taken a serious downturn since the new CEO took over. Leadership still claims to be everything the company is known for in the area, but in reality, it's nothing like that anymore. Further, the company keeps putting more and more policies and layers in place that further distance itself from the culture and quality that it used have. I could write volumes on the negatives about this place, but for brevity’s sake, I’ll just put some highlights: • Lack of focus on quality and an increased focus on just getting things out the door • Reluctance to accept new ideas that challenge the status quo even though they encourage employees to share innovative ideas that shake things up • Terrible leadership that doesn’t understand how to run a digital agency • Preference for employees who just do what they’re told without questioning anything over employees who voice their opinions and try to make a difference • Little money and focus on employee professional development • Promises of perks to keep employees motivated short-term that never materialize when it comes time to deliver on them • Toxic work environment that puts more employees in tears than I’ve ever seen anywhere else I’ve worked • Pervasive gaslighting of employees to keep them from speaking up or bringing up questionable practices and business policies • High employee turnover rate, with many current employees also looking to go elsewhere • Highly toxic and manipulative leadership at the team, executive, and HR levels (which means it’s pretty hard to go to someone about any problems) • Nonexistent work-life balance for many employees • Low salary for the amount of work asked of you and the “other duties as assigned”-type responsibilities you’re given And I could go on. I understand that some of the above things are true of many companies. However, the issue here is that Geonetric claims that its differentiator is that the company isn’t like that and stands apart from traditional management and corporate culture issues. It’s a definite bait-and-switch for employees, who come in expecting a freedom-centered workplace and, instead, get anything but. And since the worst manipulation and gaslighting occurs within the HR, executive, and team leadership, you’re putting a target on your back if you try to speak up about anything. When I started at the company years ago, I was so excited. The former CEO was inspiring and made you want to come in everyday and put your best ideas and efforts forward. Unfortunately, this just isn’t that place anymore. Save yourself the heartbreak and emotional turmoil and look elsewhere for employment.

Thank you for your candid feedback. I’m pleased to hear you were able to grow your knowledge and skills at Geonetric. Hopefully those experiences helped you find a position that’s a better fit for you. Geonetric has a unique culture. We’re agile. We’re flat. Our structure has contributed to many successes for the company, teams, and individuals. And yes, there are some challenges, too. We don’t have it all figured out, but that’s OK. I trust our teams to help identify those challenges, test new ideas and improve. We know the best ideas come from those closest to the work, and we strive every day to foster a culture where employees “say it.” Last year, those new ideas contributed to a significant growth in revenue. There’s no doubt that people at Geonetric are busy – that’s why we’re recruiting. This year, we’ve added twelve new employees with plans to add even more. Along with the growth, we remain true to our values. In this month’s employee satisfaction survey (we asked employees to rate our benefits and recommend new ones), more than 80% gave our work-life balance benefits (flex time, telecommuting) above average ratings. Giving people an opportunity to do great work every day, without sacrificing time with their families, is important. I’m disappointed you had some negative experiences here. We know Geonetric isn’t a fit for everyone – and hope that you were just as excited to start at your new position as you were when you started at Geonetric. All the best, Linda

Pros

Casual dress (also a con) gave it 3 stars instead of 1 because it was a great place to work for a long while. Coworkers are fun and intelligent. They do hire the best as far as skillset

Cons

Beware the company is a clique and if you do not "fit" they will find a reason to eliminate you. I've seen it happen to a lot of good people. Also, Management is intent on getting younger, hipper staff and it shows in treatment. The "no management" they tout is a facade and if you work there you will see it. They say they are flexible but frown on remote working now that they have instilled their version of "Agile". The CEO is disengaged with side projects.

Thank you for the honest and candid feedback. It's true we do hire the best, and I'd like to think we're pretty hip! That said, the average age is 37, a bit younger than the median in Iowa (38 I believe), but probably in-line with digital/tech-heavy companies. It's also true that I've personally been very involved with Iowa Startup Accelerator, but that's very much coming full circle in developing new products for Geonetric, and teaching us new skills about how to successfully create new products and services. So, I don't really see it as a side project, more an investment in the future of the company. Sorry to hear you didn't like the environment here. I'd certainly never say it's the right fit for everyone. Best of luck in your future endeavors, Eric

Pros

Geonetric is very transparent and open. The company encourages new ideas and offers a lot of help on getting your own ideas off the ground. The agile work environment of Geonetric is really what makes it work for me. Agile is definitely not for everyone. It can sometimes be chaotic, but out of that chaos comes the best new ideas that allow Geonetric to continue to spring forward in technology and always keeps the job fresh and interesting. Aside from Geonetric work, the company also gets involved with the community and hosts meetups, coding camps, and even Operation Overnight. It's for these reasons that I truly feel at home working for Geo. I get the ability to do what I love even for a living and in turn help others do what they love. Getting even more technical, I feel Geonetric offers fair market-rate salaries for its employees. The work load is never too much, but there is always something to be done. Once again this comes from the companies overwhelming support for you to take an idea and roll with it. Lastly, I think the friendliness among Geonetric employees leads to friendships. It's easy to talk openly about ideas, which is an environment Geonetric encourages, when you truly feel comfortable talking to the people you work with everyday, and I feel extremely comfortable with the employees.

Cons

It's hard to say what cons are to working here for me. I am sure some people have some dislikes of the job as do people everywhere you go. For me though Geonetric has been nothing but a dream job.

I appreciate your feedback, thank you for sharing it. I love the amazing ideas our teams come up with! And I personally think some of the things we do outside of the core work - Operation Overnight as a recent example - really is part of what makes Geonetric special. Keep the pressure on, to keep that learning and growing happening! Best to you, Eric
