Unfortunately, my experience at Ferguson was negatively impacted by a toxic leadership culture. Senior leadership fostered an environment driven by fear, excessive control, and lack of psychological safety rather than collaboration and trust.
A significant issue was a blame-driven management style. The Financial Systems Manager frequently shifted responsibility for their own mistakes onto analysts. Employees were discouraged from speaking up or defending themselves, as doing so often led to negative reactions or retaliation. This created a culture of silence where mistakes were hidden instead of addressed constructively
Management at multiple levels demonstrated extreme micromanagement, inconsistent direction, and reactive behavior. Decisions frequently changed without clear communication, creating confusion, stress, and constant rework. Employees were not empowered to do their jobs and were often second-guessed, even on routine tasks.
There was little accountability at the leadership level. Favoritism and poor communication further contributed to low morale.
Long-term success would require significant improvements in leadership maturity, communication, and respect for employees.
