Insulting Pay

Pros

The only real pro with regard to mudlogging, is the ability to make O&G connections at the rig site, in order to get a new job ASAP. Management did try to be accommodating, and treats their loggers like real people, so that's another good thing. Using the company apartment in Odessa when you are lucky enough to have a day or two off is also a benefit.

Cons

Everything else about mudlogging is a con. $12/hr to have no life and work 12.5 hour shifts as a degreed scientist is downright insulting. Pay your people more money ExLog!

Pros

Benefits are actually pretty good. You can technically use this as geology work experience, very easy to get hired here

Cons

When hired for this position, I signed a contract saying that I would get promoted to a higher paying position after reaching a certain number of hours. The company froze promotions in April of 2020 WITHOUT making an official announcement, and STILL has yet to reinstate a promotional scale. Every couple months Exlog will say ''yeah we're about to come out with a new performance based promotional system" It’s been almost a year since promotions were cancelled and no such system is in place. Objectively, this is the company lying to employees and stringing them along with false hope so employees don't quit. Also, in the grand scheme of things, mudlogging is a dead-end job. There's nowhere to go from mudlogging, nobody who works here is leaving for office Ops Geologist positions in Houston, and our Geosteering department no longer exists. This downturn was brutal for Oil & Gas and will have long term negative consequences for the industry, please go work in Mining or Environmental Geology if you're a fresh Geology graduate who wants to start off their career. Oh yeah, the company also recently changed our job titles so we are no longer called "Logging Geologists." Contractually, our position is now called "Mudlogger 1-4" This decision baffles me, technically you cannot even call yourself a Geologist working here, so why bother taking this entry level job if you aren't even getting "Geologist” work experience for your resume, Management- Please fix this. Also, you will spend more time at work maintaining oil/mud coated equipment than doing actual geology. In my opinion you can barely call this a geology related position. Also, as a mudlogger you are not respected whatsoever in the industry. Everyone on the oil rig looks down and talks down to you, and Exlog management will do the same. When you’re on the rig, most people will already hate you just because you are a mudlogger. Oh yeah, and you get paid less than a floorhand.

Pros

None whatsoever except that if you are starving you can afford rice and beans that can sustain you to find another job even if it is at a convenience store or similar.

Cons

Low low pay. $15.50/hr in the oilfield?!?!? Get real!! No work/life balance Staying in nasty camper trailer onsite with no running water.
