Pros

1. Location, Location, Location 2. Did I mention the location?

Cons

It has been said that the EUI is a great place to end one's career before retirement, not to start it.

Pros

Salary and allowances are good, proportioned to the cost of life in Florence, but very dissatisfying compared to other international institutions. Allowances cover relocation, household and medical expenses, which is a must for foreign employees.

Cons

The management provided by heads of services and departments is most of the time inefficient, with lack of method, disorganization, and the staff performance and commitment reflects it directly. There are a few exceptions such as the library staff, but in general both new employees and researchers will experience frustration on a daily basis

Good for a temporary stay

Pros

The setting is beautiful, good quality of life, good work/life balance. There is cultural and linguistic diversity from across Europe (but not ethnic or racial diversity). For those with small children, there is a subsidised nursery. The salary is good, especially for Italy.

Cons

No career progression possible for early career academics. You can only be a postdoc or a senior professor here- there is nothing in-between. Except for some categories of postdocs, there is no investment in your training or in your career advancement (no travel funds for conferences for example). There is no retirement plan for postdocs.
