Run far far away, as fast as you can - Interior Designer workshop/apd Employee Review

Pros

The people are great. Coworkers even amongst the various studios mingle and it makes the experience bearable. The budgets are expansive which provides room to explore and play with materiality and high ticket items. Which still comes at the cost of the directors lack of imagination shooting down anything other than neutrals or images you can find on Pinterest to reference. It seems like the other studios (Architecture) put in the effort with their staff, I would apply to architecture positions only.

Cons

Where do I even start. I've never encountered such manipulative, condescending and downright robotic staff. One of the pillars is 'People first' and it is anything but. The ultimate client are the principals, even if the clients want one thing and the principals dont. I've watched the interior studio turn every single employee into the most self-doubting, exhausted, overworked, and spiteful designer with imposter syndrome that requires years of therapy to fix. Did I learn a lot? Sure, but I could've learned what I did in an environment that genuinely wants their employees to succeed, grow, and learn. This is not that place. I had such high hopes and came in with such gusto and inspiration, I was depleted of my connections and depleted of all of my energy in favor of another beige sofa and being told every single thing is wrong. Damned if you do damned if you dont. Please I beg you, run away. Thank me later

Pros

A lot of exciting projects! As a designer I think the project exposure is great for high end residential projects. Worked on some pretty cool ones in great locations. The standards are pretty high but usually the PMs are supportive, (as an Intermediate I appreciated the effort to meet standards). Sometimes some long hours, mostly due to client demands but leadership tends to be generous around holidays so makes it very balanced (I've been in worse places where they don't even offer summer hours).

Cons

Maybe to tie it to some of the comments about senior management - there seems to be some miscommunication between SST that creates this sense of micromanagement or lack of delegation skills and then it trickles down. Personally I have not experience manipulation, gaslighting or any condescending tones. Even during my reviews there was a level of support and constructive criticism, I like to be proactive so I would make sure to set these conversations early and just deal with them. You get what you put into it basically.
