Pros

Good benefits for yourself (but not dependents), such as medical, retirement, vacation, parental leave, and sabbatical. Decent pay for nonprofit sector.

Cons

WRA hires professional staff that are the subject matter experts in their respective policy spaces. But, management routinely ignores the recommendations of professional staff, even when staff are unanimous in their recommendations. They also have long-stand equity issues including disparate treatment of women and very few people of color even represented in the organization. Retaliation, censorship, and behind closed doors deals with polluting companies are routine.

Pros

My colleagues are kind, thoughtful, and very smart. They really care about their work and making the West a better place. The benefits are good and management wants you to take your time off when you need it. WRA has been flexible when my family’s needs have come up.

Cons

Growing pains and non-profit pay.

Pros

Sabbatical if you stay for 5 years. Staff in-person retreat, changes locations, great to see the entire staff together. Entire company is passionate about state policies and pushing state government to be more green.

Cons

- Besides staff retreat, employees do not socialize with one another except for an occasional HH. - Uncomfortable social hierarchy that felt stuck in the 90s and serious power dynamics with leadership. You need to adapt and be receptive to change. - Little area for professional development outside of your job description. - Issues with being a donor-facing company, WRA posts on social media about what success means instead of building real relationships in the communities. - huge turnover / retention issue - Not safe for people of color
