Pros

My compensation was about the only good thing and I've been in the banking industry for 15+ years working both in retail and back office.

Cons

I worked in the New York market as a Universal Banker for a year and a half and my banking center manager was clueless on products and what their role as a manager was. My manager had little to no banking experience to begin with and most of the managers were brought to the company by a friend who worked in upper management. There was so much gossip about the managers that it became unhealthy. Majority of managers were out of compliance and didn't follow through with anything. I have been in the banking industry for more than 15 years; at any rate I could've ran the branch myself with the knowledge and experience I have. My manager was constantly making personal calls and going to luncheons with friends, never once did they do any work from inside the branch but still got compensated pretty well. Scheduling was horrible; you're only off ONE Saturday a month while the other three you're working or coming in for a couple of hours to make cold calls in hopes for a new account or loan. I'm not sure when Webster will realize that cold calling DOESN'T WORK! Asking for vacation time was like pulling teeth because every branch was usually only staffed with three to four people including the manager and of course, approval on vacation time was usually based on favoritism. There was absolutely no room for growth since there's only three positions at retail level and the market manager supported favoritism/nepotism. The HR department wouldn't even back you up either. You were given a set of goals to make each quarter which were nearly impossible to achieve since the general public doesn't know much about Webster Bank in New York. The incentive plan was the main focus almost every day and they took the focus off of the customers but instead placed focus on the employees themselves making it a cut throat environment. All in all, I would not recommend anyone to work for Webster Bank until they fix their issues with retail and upper level management. All they cared about was shoving products down people's throats and that's not what banking is about.
