Pros
The Navy is a place to show your pride in your Country. I think it is the beast place to do your patriotic duty. This is because Sailors are often the first impression of our military that foreign nations see. We pull into port at hundreds of different locations all over the world. So when we interact with the local population in a foreign country, we are the example to the rest of the world. So when we act professional and show courtesy we are received well. If we act like idiots then you get the picture. So as a Sailor in the US Navy you get the privilege to be an ambassador for your country.
Cons
A lot of time away from family. As a Sailor you sometimes are fortunate to enjoy shore duty. The hours are the usual 40+ and you get to go home every night. That changes dramatically with Sea Duty. At sea you are gone from home for six months at a time or more if the situation requires. The hours are 12 on and 12 off if you are lucky. Sometimes you work for two or three weeks before you see a port of call. Port visits do make it worthwhile though. The Navy makes a lot of effort to get all Sailors to rotate regularly between shore and sea duty. You got to love serving your Country, the personal rewards are great.
