Sunken Place - Social Worker II Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Employee Review

Pros

Extensive development opportunities a lot of paid training. Team members (TCS) are amazing people. They do so much for so little and TNDC is truly lucky to have them. TNDC does their best to have open dialogue with staff about what they need and desire. While the conversation is welcomed, action is missing.

Cons

Unsustainable workload burnout is prevalent. Property management is in opposition of Support Services (TCS). Makes it extremely hard to show up to work everyday knowing that you have to deal with property management. No matter how hard you work as a social worker it has been my experience that it does not matter because property management sabotages the good to cover their bad and there is nothing you can do about it. Hence the sunken place. It begins to feel like a bunch of crabs in a bucket! The pay is a far cry from what it needs to be to survive in the Bay Area. The irony is that we are home and health and staff are literally homeless. Not enough workers which causes the already burned out workers to take on much greater responsibility for the same not enough pay. Very unsustainable. But they do it with a smile which is so admirable of them but unfair. No one should take on as much as TNDC TCS staff do.

Pros

Working with some of the most marginalized communities and largely low-income communities of color on all issues impacting their lives and their neighborhood. Our work really makes a difference in peoples day to day life and helps drive policy citywide as well.

Cons

Sometimes TNDC's mission and our Community Organizing Dept. mission working with the community at large aren't always in alignment. TNDC is still a developer and I think sometimes plays the middle ground and doesn't take a stand on important issues as often as it should as an organization. It leaves residents and community partners unsure of where TNDC stands and its values.

Pros

The goal of TNDC is working to get very low income folks housed. They provide food drop offs, Tenderloin After School Program, counseling and more to their tenants. You can tell most of the staff here really care about the community and are driven by their passion to do good work and trying to make the Tenderloin a better place.

Cons

The Tenderloin is known for being a difficult neighborhood to work in and you see things regularly that you may have never seen before. It can be a bit disheartening to work in this environment, so you really need to have a passion for the work to continue on here. They are also an affordable housing nonprofit so the salaries aren't as good as they would be in the private sector.
